Continue ReadingWith the 2023 high school football regular season coming close to a close, I wanted to take a look back at some of the top performers from the season. With that being said, I will be releasing my watchlists for my Offensive, Defensive, and Two-Way Player of the Year awards for the 2023 season. After covering the offensive and defensive sides of the ball, here is my 2023 Two-Way Player of the Year watchlist.
Daniel Thomas Daniel Thomas 5’9″ | 180 lbs | ATH Bell County | 2024 State KY is a player that is having an outstanding senior year. Thomas finished the regular season as the statewide leading rusher with 237 carries for 2,574 yards and 40 touchdowns. Thomas has very explosive speed, showing the ability to burst through the running lane with a sense of urgency then hit a second gear to run away from the defense. When defenders do catch up to him, Thomas has shown the contact balance to break tackles without losing stride. He also has played a key role on defense, accounting for 61 tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack, and two fumble recoveries ,with one returned for a touchdown, so far. Daniel currently holds an offer from Kentucky Wesleyan and I expect more to come his way as he definitely has the talent to play at the next level.
Highlights
Steve Partin Steve Partin 6’2″ | 195 lbs | ATH Knox Central | 2024 State KY is another player that has stood out in a big way during his senior year. He is among the statewide leaders in rushing, carrying the ball 205 times for 1,813 yards and 24 touchdowns in eight games. Partin is a strong runner that has shown the ability to run straight through defenders without breaking stride. Once he hits the open field, Partin has also shown the he has the speed to run away from the defense on long runs. Steve also plays a key role on defense at linebacker where he is disruptive both as a run stopper and pass rusher. He has accounted for 64 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, and five sacks so far. Partin is committed to Yale where I can see him carving out a key role on either side of the ball once he gets there.
Daulton Tarter Daulton Tarter 5’9″ | 200 lbs | ATH Bracken County | 2026 State KY is another player that has stood out on both sides of the ball this season. On defense, he lines up at linebacker where he is impressive against the run, showing the ability to read his keys and get to the ball in a hurry to make tackles. He finished the regular season as his teams lead tackler with 94 along with 17 tackles for loss. Tarter has also shown reliability against the pass both as a rusher and in coverage, coming away with three sacks and three interceptions (one returned for a touchdown) so far. Daulton has also been Bracken County’s lead back this season. He is a very strong runner with the contact balance to break tackles in the open field without losing stride. Tarter finished the regular season with 119 carries for 1,223 yards and 21 touchdowns. He has also caught two touchdown passes and returned one kickoff for a touchdown. Daulton doesn’t currently hold any offers but is a player that college coaches should definitely keep an eye on over the next few seasons.

Montavin Quisenberry Montavin Quisenberry 5’9″ | 160 lbs | ATH Boyle County | 2025 State KY has continued to solidify himself as the top player in the state in his class. He has done a little bit of everything for the Rebels this season. Quisenberry does a lot of his damage at receiver where he is able to use his speed and quickness to create separation from opposing defensive backs. He finished the regular season as the team’s leading receiver with 28 catches for 554 yards and nine touchdowns. Montavin has also played a key role in the run game, carrying the ball 37 times for 406 yards and 12 touchdowns so far. He is also an electric return specialist on special teams, returning one punt and two kickoffs for touchdowns this season. Quisenberry has also played a role on defense as a defensive back, finishing the regular season with 36 tackles, four tackles for loss, and two interceptions. Montavin currently holds offers from Kentucky, Michigan, Ole Miss, and Louisville, and I expect more to come his way as he is a true Power 5 caliber prospect.
William Carrico William Carrico 6’0″ | 190 lbs | ATH Owensboro Catholic | 2024 State KY is a player that has been high on my radar for a while now and has continued to impress this season. Carrico finished the regular season among the statewide leading receivers, catching 59 passes for 1,146 yards and 17 touchdowns. He is a very impressive route runner out of the slot, showing the ability to use smooth breaks in his routes to create separation. Carrico also showed some ability as a ball carrier, running the ball 17 times for 113 yards this season. He has also played a key role on defense as an outside linebacker/safety, accounting for 79 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, 0.5 sacks, and four interceptions so far. William currently holds offers from Kentucky Wesleyan, Benedictine College, Ave Maria, and Marian, and I expect more to come his way as he has the talent to play at the next level.
Another player that I’ve had high on my radar for a while now and has continued to impress this season is Brock Coffman Brock Coffman 6’0″ | 160 lbs | WR Sayre School | 2025 State KY . Coffman has proven to be one of the most talented receivers in the state this season, catching 46 passes for 808 yards and 16 touchdowns in eight games. He has explosive speed which he uses to pose as a deep threat and also after the catch to turn short passes into big gains. Coffman has also proven to be a dangerous return specialist, returning one punt for a touchdown so far. He has also been very impressive in the secondary on defense, coming away with five interceptions while also returning one fumble recovery for a touchdown so far. Brock currently holds offers from Maryland and Eastern Kentucky, and I expect more to come his way as he is a true Power 5 caliber prospect.
Austin Alexander Austin Alexander 6’3″ | 215 lbs | DL Cooper | 2025 State KY has continued to prove that he is one of the best players in the entire state this season. On defense, he lines up at defensive end where he is very impressive as a pass rusher. He uses an impressive blend on speed and strength to blow by opposing offensive tackles off the edge to get to the quarterback. Alexander finished the season with 14 sacks. He also showed the ability to make plays in pass coverage, coming away with one interception. Austin has also shown the ability to stop the run, accounting for 58 tackles and five tackles for loss so far. He has also played a key role on offense at tight end, catching 46 passes for 787 yards and 11 touchdowns. Austin currently holds multiple Power 5 offers and I expect more to come his way as he is a very talented prospect.
Martels Carter Jr Martels Carter Jr 6’0″ | 185 lbs | ATH Paducah Tilghman | 2025 State KY . has quickly solidified himself as one of the top players in the state after transferring to Paducah Tilghman this season. Carter finished the regular season as his team’s leading receiver, catching 31 passes for 810 yards and nine touchdowns. He lines up in the slot where he has shown that he has the speed to stretch the field in the deep passing game. Carter has also played a small role in the run game, carrying the ball seven times for 118 yards and a touchdown this season. He has also played a key role on special teams, returning three punts and one kickoff for touchdowns so far. Carter is also a very impressive defensive back on the other side of the ball, finishing the regular season with 29 tackles and an interception. Martels currently holds offers from Kentucky, Eastern Kentucky, and Ole Miss, and I expect more to come his way as he is a true Power 5 caliber prospect.
Kam Hughes Kam Hughes 5’9″ | 180 lbs | ATH Somerset | 2024 State KY is a player that has been on my radar for a while now and has truly stood out this season. Hughes has been very impressive out of the backfield, showing the speed and elusiveness to break away on long runs at any given moment. He finished the regular season with 155 carries for 1,405 yards and 22 touchdowns. Kam has also caught 23 passes for 253 yards and a touchdown, and has returned one punt for a touchdown so far this season. He has also played a key role on defense at safety, accounting for 76 tackles, three tackles for loss, and five interceptions so far. Hughes currently holds offers from Hanover and Union, and I expect more to come his way as he definitely has the talent to play at the next level.

To wrap up my 2023 Two-Way Player of the Year watchlist, I have Jullian Seymour Jullian Seymour 5’11” | 165 lbs | ATH Green County | 2024 State KY . He has played a key role on both sides of the ball for Green County this season. On offense, Jullian finished the regular season as his team’s leading rusher with 135 carries for 872 yards and 11 touchdowns. He has also played a key role in the passing game, catching 27 passes for 403 yards and five touchdowns. On defense, Seymour has been a ball hawk in the Green County secondary, finishing the season second in the entire state with eight interceptions, returning two for touchdowns. He has also shown the ability to provide support against the run, accounting for 48 tackles and one tackle for loss so far. Jullian doesn’t currently hold any offers but I expect some to come his way as he has received some college interest and has the talent to play somewhere at the next level.
