Continue ReadingHampton County’s Zion Dobson Zion Dobson 5'10" | 175 lbs | RB Hampton County | 2024 State SC only got six carries to work with on Friday night. That was all he needed to hit the century mark – twice. There was no match for Dobson’s running or Hampton County elite defense, as the Hurricanes rolled visiting C.A. Johnson 41-0 to improve to 4-0 on the season.
The man of the hour didn’t waste any time getting his big night going, as Dobson found a crease on the right side on the second play from scrimmage and stormed down the sideline for a 66-yard rushing touchdown. His dominant agility and strength overwhelmed the Hornets’ defense, racking up 221 rushing yards and two touchdowns on his, yes, six carries in the game. Dobson and the Hurricanes put up 353 total rushing yards on the night, compared to just 86 for C.A. Johnson. And it wasn’t just the ground attack that had head coach Rob Hanna and Hurricanes fans excited. It was the best they’ve seen so far from quarterback Chris Terry, who put up an efficient 6-of-11 completions for 86 yards and two touchdowns. And the first one was highlight-reel worthy. Just as Terry looked like he was about to scramble to try to pick up a fourth-and-six, he eluded a swarm of Hornets, spotted Dobson open in the end zone, and threw a strike his way for a momentum-changing touchdown. From that point on it was all Hampton, as Dobson added another score on the ground with an eye-popping 61-yard run to make it 21-0. The Hurricanes scored on all of their drives except for two while totaling 429 total yards.
If the biggest story about Hampton County’s 4-0 start is Dobson, the swarming defense wouldn’t be too far behind. Hanna’s unit put on a textbook effort from start to finish, pitching a shutout on the night and frustrating a dynamic C.A. Johnson ground game in the process. It’s a well-constructed group with speed and relentlessness everywhere you look. Mandrell Sanders Mandrell Sanders 5'11" | 190 lbs | LB Hampton County | 2025 State SC made the biggest impression, showing his wheels and physicality to blow up plays in the backfield including three straight tackles for loss to stop a promising Hornet drive in its tracks. Dominant defensive lineman Kavon Chisolm was a standout presence throughout with his dynamite strength up front, and Cody Segars Cody Segars 5'10" | 175 lbs | LB Hampton County | 2024 State SC delivered at linebacker, making a key tackle seemingly every series thanks to his impressive reads and pursuit of the Hornets’ backs.
Next week may not be a region game, but Dobson’s anticipation is already building for what could be a tremendous battle with Hilton Head next Friday in Hampton. With two teams coming off shutout wins with strong, physical defenses, Dobson is ready to make another statement against a quality SCHSL 4A team.
“Last year they held me to 43 yards on offense,” Dobson said. “So I gotta prove everybody wrong and prove I am the football player I know that I can be.”
C.A. JOHNSON NOTABLES
Caleb Pearson Caleb Pearson 5'8" | 170 lbs | ATH CA Johnson | 2024 State SC WR/CB, 2024- Caleb Pearson Caleb Pearson 5'8" | 170 lbs | ATH CA Johnson | 2024 State SC was a sparkplug on both ends for the Hornets, serving as a quick and efficient runner offensively and a productive tackler on defense. He’s an excellent athlete who can serve a variety of roles and make the most of his opportunities.
HAMPTON COUNTY NOTABLES
Zamone Lofties WR-CB 2024- Making impacts on both sides for the Hurricanes, Zamone Lofties provided some speed and agility out wide and a hunger on defense to make plays. His high energy was noticeable on both sides of the ball and will be an underrated supporting piece of a talented and deep Hampton County group that continues to rise up the ranks in Class 2A.
Xaviar Garvin QB/DB 2024- The other half of the Hurricanes’ quarterbacking duo, Xaviar Garvin is an excellent role player who can produce in bunches when his number is called. A two-way standout at Estill last year, Garvin knows how to thrive under center as a game manager while excelling in pass coverage with his height and athleticism. He’s an excellent versatile piece to have in the back pocket and showed why with a touchdown run on Friday night.
