The Hurricanes, in its first year of existence with the merger of Wade Hampton and Estill, came in undefeated and No. 5 in the latest Class 2A rankings. The Bearcats on the other hand had lost two in a row and wanted to get back on solid footing with region play beginning next week.
It was no better way for Brookland-Cayce to do that than put the football into the hands of De’shaun Washington De’shaun Washington 5'10" | 200 lbs | ATH Brookland-Cayce | 2024 State SC . The senior was more than up to the task as the Bearcats used the 181 yards rushing and four touchdowns from the 6-foot, 215-pound senior to claim a 28-14 victory over Hampton County.
“We got so far down against AC Flora and Chapin, we had to go to almost a no-huddle, throw it every down but that hasn’t really been our style,” Brookland-Cayce coach Rusty Charpia said. “Our MO in the last three or four years, we’ve had some good offensive linemen and good backs and we’ve tried to run the ball. At the end, we sort of seemed to take charge.”
It was a 7-6 contest entering the final quarter when Washington (pictured) and the B-C offensive front seemed to get stronger. An’Tohn Ford, Kamden Sox Kamden Sox 6'4" | 290 lbs | OL Brookland-Cayce | 2024 State SC , Jacory Jones, Jordan Browning, Jackson Bowers and Jared Holmes (who lined up at H-Back more than offensive line) were controlling the line of scrimmage and that allowed Washington to score on runs of 4, 2 and 11 yards in the final quarter.
Washington increased the lead to 14-6 with his 4-yard run with 9:46 remaining.
Wade Hampton answered right back with an 8-play, 80-yard drive that was capped by Zion Dobson Zion Dobson 5'10" | 175 lbs | RB Hampton County | 2024 State SC ‘s second 1-yard TD run of the night. The two-point conversion pass from Chris Terry to Kavon Chisolm tied it at 14 with 6:53 remaining.
But again, it was Washington that marched the Bearcats right back down the field. He carried the ball four times on the five-play 62-yard drive that he capped with a 2-yard plunge with 4:47 remaining. The drive was aided by a pass interference and personal foul penalty against the Hurricanes on the same play.
Brookland-Cayce’s defense then forced a turnover over downs on the next series and Washington carried it twice in the 2-play, 25-yard drive that salted things away with his 11-yard score with 2:13 remaining.
“The OL was working great tonight,” Washington said. “We ran the trap, and they couldn’t stop it with that unbalanced line. We just kept running it.”
After allowing 80 points in the last two weeks, the Bearcats defense was up to the task against the run-oriented attack of Hampton County. Dobson came into the contest with 882 yards rushing and he topped the 100-yard mark but was mainly held in check.
Dobson’s longest run was 17 yards and he finished with 116 yards on 28 carries.
Tyrone Jackson led the Bearcats defense. But the front of Holmes, John Allen Mower, Nick Matthews, Nehemiah Daniels and Davion McGill Boykin held the Hampton County offense in check for most of the night.
Shrine Bowl selection Will Young Will Young 5'10" | 165 lbs | ATH Brookland-Cayce | 2024 State SC was solid in the secondary and played quarterback and wide receiver for Brookland-Cayce.
“We knew they had some good players and good athletes, and we knew we had to get after them,” Jackson said. “The defense as a whole was able to get the job done.”
HAMPTON COUNTY NOTABLES
Dobson was the bulk of the offense, but others stood out for the Hurricanes.
Chisolm had several pancake blocks from his H-back position and more than held his own from his defensive end spot. Offensive linemen Daniel Anderson and Ty’jae Wright were good upfront.
