Starring on both sides for the Trinity Collegiate Titans, Courtlyn Brunson was the sparkplug in his team’s 65-14 victory over Atlantic Collegiate. The senior dominated in the ground game and out wide, totaling 147 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns. He brought some energy defensively, making two tackles including a sack. A quick and agile athlete who has the stamina and grit to shine in all three phases, Brunson is becoming a valuable weapon for an up-and-coming Titans squad.
Landen Newman
Landen Newman
It was a stellar outing for Landen Newman to lead a strong Trinity Collegiate defensive and special teams performance on Friday. Newman’s high intensity and pursuit helped him rack up seven tackles and one for loss while adding an interception return for a touchdown. His quickness and anticipation defensively were noticeable on every snap, and his unending hustle showed up on special teams with both a field goal block and a punt block. He’s a monster playmaker who can do it all no matter where he’s put on the field, and he went above and beyond on Friday to power his squad to a big night.
A defending state champion in SCISA 2A, Teague Ward delivered a strong game for the Williamsburg Academy Stallions on both sides of the ball in a hard-fought win over Florence Christian. Ward was the difference-maker to move the chains, turning 13 carries into 133 yards and two touchdowns while adding two catches for 15 yards. He was a menace on defense too, using his quick mobility and physicality to notch four tackles for loss and a quarterback hurry. An elusive playmaker out in open space who always shows up with an extra edge on defense, Ward might be the most complete player in SCISA 2A this year.
Highlights
Hugh Fairey
Hugh Fairey
Hugh Fairey chose a great time to have his best game so far as a Patrick Henry Academy Patriot. He was unbeatable against defending SCISA 1A champ Lee Academy, throwing for 264 yards and three touchdowns through the air and adding 143 rushing yards and a score on top. An electric playmaker with the ball in his hands who has that extra compete level no matter the sport, Fairey rose to another level on Friday night and took what the defense gave him while making a few dazzling improv plays of his own. He’s got quite a connection with brother Forest Fairey, which was lethal all night long to the tune of 253 of those passing yards and all three scores. If the Fairey brothers can stay this dominant, it could be a dominant run through SCISA 1A for the Patriots.
Jammall Fludd
Jammall Fludd
A terrific two-way player for the Porter-Gaud Cyclones, Jammall Fludd brought it on Friday in a shutout victory over Camden Military. Fludd was effective on the ground, making defenders miss to total 87 yards and three touchdowns on 11 carries. He added an interception to his big day defensively and set the tone for his unit with his hustle and anticipation. He’ll be a constant threat on the ground and an underrated corner for the still-undefeated Cyclones.
Blake Bost
Blake Bost
Ben Lippen picked up a gutsy win over Pinewood Prep on Friday to stay unbeaten, and Blake Bost was a big reason why. Bost’s hands and elusiveness out wide sparked the offense, catching five passes for 93 yards and a touchdown. His alertness defensively was also noticeable, pouncing on the football to recover a forced fumble. He makes a bunch of little plays add up, and he can turn on the jets when he gets the ball in space. Bost will be the featured target of an efficient Falcon offense this fall.
The legend of Austyn Grady and Northwood Academy got even better on Friday night, as the Chargers won their third straight game to open the season. Grady sparked his team with a sensational showing at quarterback, completing 19 of 29 passes for 284 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He’s an efficient passer and has developed a strong chemistry with budding sophomore receiver Aydan Hogan. He’s been the catalyst of a high-flying Northwood offense that is looking like a strong contender in SCISA 3A.
