We are starting to see who are the top dogs across the state as we are officially over the halfway point on the 2023 season. More contenders are emerging and with conference play starting just a couple of weeks ago, several schools still have a shot at district playoffs. Here are some notable games for week 6:

South County vs Madison:

Not only are these two of the top ranked schools in Northern Virginia, both squads have an argument to be top 5 in the state. Yes this Friday the Stallions (4-1) will travel to Vienna to take on the undefeated Warhawks (5-0) for the biggest game in the commonwealth. The state runner up for Class 6 Madison has been on fire the first half of the season, with victories over playoff worthy Yorktown, Lake Braddock and Chantilly. The Warhawks have an assortment of playmakers on offense including the Yates brother (Cael and Cord) along with all-state running back [player_tooltip player_id='1228836' first='Dominic' last='Knicely'] this should be a doozy Friday night

South County proved they are one of the best teams in the state with the demolishing of Fairfax, they didn't slow down last week putting over 50 points in their win against Hayfield. Has to be mentioned the Stallions lone blemish so far has been to Quince Orchard a traditional powerhouse. Besides that South County has taken on all comers and handled their business can they take down the reigning regional champs this week?

Players to Watch: WR [player_tooltip player_id='157096' first='Cord' last='Yates'], QB [player_tooltip player_id='1232344' first='Cael' last='Yates'], LB [player_tooltip player_id='584175' first='Luke' last='Jarvis'], RB [player_tooltip player_id='1228836' first='Dominic' last='Knicely'], WR [player_tooltip player_id='1231573' first='Tyler' last='Orth'], QB [player_tooltip player_id='157098' first='Jordan' last='Dennis'], LB Tyler Ohlmeyer, LB Joe Poinelli

Forest Park vs. Freedom:

Freedom has been on cruise control and may be thinking now that they enter conference play they can stay on it? Personally I don't see a Coach Overton squad ever letting up, but perhaps it could be the spark plug the visiting Forest Park Bruins (3-2, 1-0) need. Do not look now but the Bruins have quietly ripped off three wins in a row and have some studs up front that can give the Eagles problems.

Behind workhorse junior running back [player_tooltip player_id='1231470' first='Landon' last='Hunt'] Forest Park has picked things up a bit offensively, to go along with they're already stout defense. The Eagles rolled through Gar-Field last Friday and are the heavy favorite not only in the district but the entire Class 6 to repeat as champions. Can Coach Robinette squad keep the momentum going this week, we certainly will find out in two days.

Players to Watch: QB [player_tooltip player_id='313739' first='Tristan' last='Evans'], RB Jeffery Overton, C Walter Hughes, WR Kam Courtney, WR/DB [player_tooltip player_id='313740' first='Elijah' last='Reid'], RB [player_tooltip player_id='1231470' first='Landon' last='Hunt'], DL [player_tooltip player_id='941585' first='Andrew' last='Perry'], OL [player_tooltip player_id='1228338' first='Nathaniel' last='Wright']

St. Michael the Archangel vs Flint Hill:

The Flint Hill Huskies seem to have their swagger back after pummeling Bishop O'Connell this past Monday. The Huskies had been on a 2 game losing streak in their brutal independent schedule, but seemed to have righted the ship to improve to 2-2 overall. For the visiting Warriors since back to back losses to Dematha and Episcopal, they have been rolling, averaging over 25 points per game. This has the making of a classic Saturday afternoon in Oakton and I can't wait to see it!

A fun one with two independent squads across the state will battle it out, if you do not know already, this game will feature over 10 division prospects and counting.

Players to Watch: WR [player_tooltip player_id='363120' first='Joshua' last='Clarke'], QB Manoli Karageorgos, QB [player_tooltip player_id='1230156' first='Nahshon' last='Wilson'], CB [player_tooltip player_id='372540' first='Remington' last='Moss'], LB [player_tooltip player_id='136936' first='Jeremiah' last='Pugh']
