Continue ReadingThe Rosemount Irish flexed their muscle at home against one of the newest 6A schools – Rochester Mayo. It didn’t take long for the 2022 state runner-up to take control of the game. The Irish won – going away – 34-8. Here are the players who I felt stood out individually.
Brody Webster, Jacob Kanta, Brady Struble Brady Struble 6'3" | 270 lbs | OL Rosemount | 2026 MN , Maxwell Townsend, Talon Holmen Talon Holmen 6'2" | 270 lbs | OL Rosemount | 2025 State MN
The entire Rosemount offensive line eventually wore down the smaller Spartans’ front seven. They were the group that most impacted the game when the Irish had the ball. During a 95-yard touchdown drive, especially Struble, Townsend, and Holmen dominated as the line took control of the game. On the defensive line, Holmen stood out as well. He made a tackle on the inside for a short gain. Later, he played a screen well and made a tackle for a short loss.
Early, Whelan used his speed to get the corner for a pair of nine-yard runs behind Brody Webster and Jacob Kanta. He picked up another first down off the left side. Late in the first half, Whelan caught a ball in the flat, got up-field, and got out of bounds to stop the clock. On defense, against the pass, he read a screen and made a tackle for a short gain. Later, he deflected a pass and then broke up a crossing pattern. Against the run, he shot a gap and ran down a sweep from behind.
Remington Gau

Eventually, the bigger, more physical offensive line took control of the game. However, early in the game, Gau was making life difficult on the inside. He did a good job plugging up the middle of the line of scrimmage, making tackles on inside runs for short gains. He used good quickness and a low center of gravity to hold up at the point of attack.
Highlights
Lebron See-Stadstad
Lebron See-Stadstad
On defense, he had great coverage on a crossing route. On offense, he caught a short curl route and got upfield to pick up a first down on fourth down. Later, he caught a wide receiver screen and used his blocks well to pick up good yardage.
Peroutka made standout plays on both sides of the ball. With the quarterback buying time by scrambling, he stayed in great coverage all over the field. He ended up deflecting the pass. On offense, he caught a fade in double coverage for twenty-five yards.
Rees Grimsrud
Rees Grimsrud
Grimsrud had a tough night. He was under pressure most of the night. Even so, his talent was evident. He avoided pressure and made a nice throw to the sidelines for a first down. He was able to get the ball out quickly and accurately. Because of the pressure, he was forced to use his legs more often than he wanted to. During those times, he was able to use his legs to pick yardage.
Ryan Kusch
Ryan Kusch
Kusch was the biggest benefactor of the offensive line. He started the Irish’s 95-yard touchdown drive with a tough run up the middle to get off the goal line. He found a lot of room on the right side of the line, including a fifteen-yard run. Later, Kusch made a nice cut to pick up yards. Again, behind the right side, the line got him the first three yards, but then he made a nice cut to pick up seven or eight more. After a ten-yard run to the right, he broke a tackle and picked up twenty yards. On a short run near the goal line, he powered forward for three yards on his own. He made a nice cut behind Struble, Townsend, and Holmen for big yards, then scored untouched a play later behind the same guys.
William Riddel
William Riddel
Riddel strung out a run to allow his teammates to make the tackle – preventing a big gain. Against the pass, he put a hit on the quarterback just as he threw. Then, he got home for a quarterback sack.
Kyson Leenderts
Kyson Leenderts
Leenderts did a nice job contributing to some of the Irish’s outside running game. As a receiver, he made a twenty-yard catch on a play-action pass. Later, he caught a ten-yard slant and dragged defenders for an extra ten yards.
Tyler Japel
Tyler Japel
Japel was very efficient with his throws. He used his footwork and ballhandling to take advantage of the running game. He often threw to wide-open receivers because of his ability to run play-action. Japel’s best throw was a perfect ball for twenty yards. He showed nice arm strength, hitting a deep crossing route. With his feet, he had success scrambling and had success with designed runs.
