Basha @ Saguaro
This one is a matchup we could definitely see again later in the year in the playoffs, and it’ll be a heavyweight fight for all 4 quarters out at Saguaro on Friday night. Saguaro starts their season 2-0 and the new kid under center Mason Bray Mason Bray 6'1" | 185 lbs | QB Saguaro | 2024 State AZ has been playing lights out and turning heads across the state. He’s already thrown for 558 yards and 7 TD’s in just two games played, and will have his toughest test yet this Friday against a stout Basha defense. Basha comes off a close loss to Highland last week which has been the best game of the 2023 season thus far, so you know they’re coming in with a chip on their shoulder. The possibility of the defending 6A state champs losing two in a row sounds almost unreal, so I imagine standout players like Demond Williams Demond Williams 5'11" | 180 lbs | QB Basha | 2024 State AZ , Thomas Prassas Thomas Prassas 6'2" | 185 lbs | DB Basha | 2024 State AZ , and many others are coming in with a purpose and something to prove. We’ll find out if Saguaro will get their first L of the year or if Basha will suffer back to back losses.
Mountain Pointe @ Centennial
Mountain Pointe’s 2023 season has been nothing but great so far as they enter the contest 2-0 with wins over Valley Vista and Palm Desert (CA). Mountain Pointe is loaded with premier prospects like Christian Clark Christian Clark 6'0" | 195 lbs | ATH Mountain Pointe | 2024 State AZ , who is one of the most explosive players in the state and a future P5 starter. Defensively, Demetrice Johnson has been an absolute problem for anyone he lines up against, showing excellent instincts, play strength, and quickness. Sophomore Teylor Caldwell has been a player that has stepped up big and early for Mountain Pointe thus far, and he’ll look to continue to keep putting his name on the map. Centennial makes this top games list for the 3rd week in a row and for good reason. After two weeks, they look like a clear open division team in my opinion, and a legit contender to win it all. Centennial enters the contest 2-0 with wins over Desert Edge and most recently a 55-21 W over corona del Sol. Holding that Desert Edge offense to a goose egg shocks me, proving that this Centennial team is for real. It doesn’t get easier this week either, as two 6A teams that have that hard nosed, gritty reputation go at it on Friday night.
Lone Peak (UT) @ Highland
Highland comes off the biggest win and game so far here in the 2023 season on a 22-21 W over the defending open division state champs at Basha. They proved they can go toe to toe with the best in the state, and come out with a favorable outcome. Truthfully, as a team and individually, they proved that 1. They’re a top 5 team in the state and 2. They have multiple players who are on the same level as some of the top recruits in Arizona. Two of those guys are Kalen Fisher Kalen Fisher 6'4" | 200 lbs | QB Highland | 2025 State AZ and Kody Cullimore Kody Cullimore 5'10" | 175 lbs | ATH Highland | 2024 State AZ . I knew these guys had some juice to them, but they showed up on a big stage and proved to me and everyone that they are even better than we all thought. So what do you do after you beat the defending state champs? Well Highland will play an out of state opponent to continue to put a staple on Arizona high school football. Lone Peak comes into the contest 1-3, but has suffered their 3 losses to three tough opponents. Tons of potential here for highland to keep the fire lit and that momentum rolling.
