We are now getting a better understanding of which teams are truly talented, which teams may have had a lucky few weeks, and which teams are looking to improve for next season. I will provide a preview for each week 5 game by conference for the 5A level. Up first this week is the Midwestern League. Each game will have a prediction and highlight some players from each team to watch based on their recent performances.
#7 Thurston (2-2) @ #6 Springfield (4-0)
Prediction: Springfield def. Thurston 34-31.
The upcoming 5A game is highly anticipated, and the entire town of Springfield is expected to attend. I’ve personally been invited to this game about fifteen times, and I believe it will be as exciting as it’s hyped up to be. Both teams are strong, and the game is likely to be closely contested. In my opinion, the linemen of Springfield, led by Sam Keen Sam Keen 6'3" | 290 lbs | OL Springfield | 2024 State OR and Nate Williams Nate Williams 6'5" | 265 lbs | OL Springfield | 2024 State OR , will make the difference by dominating the line of scrimmage for Connor Dye Connor Dye 5'10" | 170 lbs | RB Springfield | 2024 State OR . Thurston, on the other hand, has many talented players in the skill positions, with Lombel Doreen Lombel Doreen 5'7" | 155 lbs | ATH Thurston | 2024 State OR , Ethan Burkhead Ethan Burkhead 5'11" | 160 lbs | ATH Thurston | 2024 State OR , Walker Bonar Walker Bonar 6'0" | 175 lbs | WR Thurston | 2024 State OR , and more. That is why if Springfield can control the clock and run the ball consistently well, they should be able to secure a victory. If they want to test the Colts’ skilled players, they might regret that.

#13 Eagle Point (2-2) @ Willamette (0-4)
Prediction: Eagle Point def. Willamette 45-12.
It’s highly likely that Eagle Point will win this game with ease, as they have a more physical team compared to Willamette. Hayden Weaver Hayden Weaver 6'3" | 220 lbs | DL Eagle Point | 2024 State OR is expected to have a dominant performance against the Wolverines’ linemen. Although Alex Kalams-Jurak of the Wolverines displayed an impressive performance last week with some great touchdown catches, Eagle Point is likely to take the lead in this game and run away with it.

South Eugene (2-2) @ Churchill (1-3)
Prediction: Churchill def. South Eugene 35-14.
Churchill has had a tough start to their season, with a record of 1-3. However, their losses have been against some of the strongest teams in Oregon, including the top-ranked team in 4A, Marist, Mountain View ranked at #4 in 5A, and #13 Eagle Point. Despite this, Churchill has some remarkable talent on their team, which they showcased in their impressive 40-13 win against Willamette last week. South Eugene, on the other hand, didn’t have the best outing last week when they played against the tough Springfield team and were shutout. It’s unlikely they’ll fare any better this week when they face Churchill. I expect Churchill to eventually pull away, given their impressive talent and South Eugene’s recent struggles.

Crater (0-4) @ North Eugene (1-3)
Prediction: Crater def. North Eugene 32-28.
It appears that we are in for a tight game, with both teams displaying similar levels of skill and having talented players in overlapping positions. Despite Crater’s winless record, they possess a strong team that is capable of much more. The same can be said for North Eugene. While it’s difficult to predict the outcome, I am leaning towards Crater as I believe they have a more well-rounded squad.
