All of the following standouts are either first-year players or returning players who contributed to their team’s achievements in 2022, and these exceptional Week 1 performances suggest that their primary responsibilities, roles and/or production levels will be trending sharply upward this fall.
As the Tigers’ junior signal-caller playing in a split-veer offensive system, Wilson completed 25 of 68 pass attempts last fall for 618 yards and 11 touchdowns. However, if his Week 1 performance is any indication, he is poised to obliterate those passing numbers this season–perhaps just in another game or two. In his team’s 35-14 victory over Calloway County, he completed 18 of 28 pass attempts for 307 yards and 3 touchdowns and contributed another 2 touchdowns on the ground, totaling 29 yards rushing on 11 carries. Tall, technically proficient and consistently accurate when targeting short and intermediate routes, he displays the ability to maintain sound throw mechanics on the move and enlist disciplined eyes/vision as extended and/or unscripted play scenarios unfold. In this season’s first two games, he has already surpassed his total completions last season, and he needs less than 100 yards to surpass last season’s passing yardage. Clearly, the Tigers’ transition to a spread offensive attack promises to reveal a bevy of Wilson’s emergent skills in the passing game.
Highlights
When it first became apparent that Wayne County had opted to move last season’s starting quarterback to wide receiver, more than a few fans were intrigued to see the results of the decision, particularly when it became apparent that Edwards–a 5’11” 165-pound freshman–had earned the starting quarterback position. Fast-forward to now and the Cardinals are 2-0 for the first time since 2017, and their freshman quarterback confirmed that his passing accuracy, athleticism and elusiveness seem poised to fuel his continual development this fall. In their Week 1 victory over Clinton County (41-13), he completed 12 of 14 passes for 164 yards and a touchdown and added two additional touchdowns on the ground, gaining 21 yards on 3 carries. Attaining 379 yards passing, 6 total touchdowns and a 65% completion percentage in the first two game of his high school career, Edwards’ developmental trajectory will certainly draw increasing attention from fans and recruiters alike as his season and career progress.
Saxton Howard
Saxton Howard
Participating and contributing in all but a couple of the Eagles’ contests last season, Howard cobbled together a very solid sophomore stat line with 10 catches for 120 yards receiving and a touchdown, along with another 8 rushes for 50 yards and a second score. However, after LCA’s first two high-scoring shootouts with Bowling Green and Boyle County, respectively, it is readily apparent that his offensive contributions and production are slated to increase significantly this fall. In particular, his Week 1 performance against highly regarded Boyle County serves notice that opposing defenses must account for him. After collecting 7 receptions for 218 yards and a touchdown in the 47-38 loss, he has already topped or equaled his 2022 numbers with 11 total catches for 251 yards and a score. Given the high snap-counts and production numbers that the Eagles’ talented offense inevitably will generate this fall, Howard appears poised to significantly elevate his stock among those seeking talented next-level performers.
Zayden Parker
Zayden Parker
After playing exceptionally well on the defensive side of the ball for the Storm in 6 total contests as a sophomore, Parker missed his team’s season opener in Week 0, so it was especially gratifying to him not only return to form at his defensive end position, but also demonstrate the exciting ways in which his explosive athleticism translates to offense. Granted, in HCC’s 60-28 win over Fort Campbell, he essentially replicated his customary defensive production with 5 solo tackles, and 2 sacks. However, given that he registered only 1 offensive carry last year, his explosion for 160 yards rushing, 2 touchdowns and a 2-point conversion–on only 6 carries, mind you–clearly seems to suggest an expanding role for Parker offensively. A durable, high-motor performer with exceptional straight-line acceleration and speed, his opportunities to impact games on both sides of the ball certainly warrant attention.
A poised, technically proficient and flapless competitor, Smith shared the Bulldog quarterbacking duties throughout his junior season, completing 56 of 96 pass attempts for 871 yards and 12 touchdowns in 12 total contests. Thus, while he already has demonstrated the ability to play well at a very high level, it nonetheless is exciting to note his Week 1 performance now that he alone carries the “QB1” moniker this fall. In Male’s surprisingly lopsided 34-3 victory over Ballard, he completed 14 of 20 pass attempts for 237 yards and 4 touchdowns and seems poised to steer his very talented offensive unit and team to another legitimate run at the state’s 6A title. While a number of specific attributes contribute to his success playing the position, his ability to maintain throwing position on the move, release the ball quickly and exercise patience when initial reads are covered combine to separate him from most of his comparable peers.
