The newly revamped Hurricane Redskins were too much for rival Winfield defeating them 63-0 in dominating fashion. After a 13-0 first-quarter lead, Hurricane would go into halftime up 35-0. Plenty of reserve players saw their first varsity action of the year in the second half but there were still plenty of notable performances from the game. Here are some athletes that stood out during tonight’s game.
Hurricane Redskins
MVP: ’24 QB JacQai Long JacQai Long 6'2" | 200 lbs | QB Hurricane | 2024 State WV
D1 prospect and Marshall University commit JacQai Long JacQai Long 6'2" | 200 lbs | QB Hurricane | 2024 State WV returned home after a season at Archbishop Hoban (OH) for his senior year and is suiting up for the Hurricane Redskins this season. The hype was on full display tonight hurting the defense with both his arm and his legs. Long threw two pretty balls for what would’ve been two touchdowns early on but drops from his receivers would have them fall incomplete. He and his receivers started to get more in sync as the game went on and he threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Tyshawn Dues Tyshawn Dues 5'10" | 170 lbs | WR Hurricane | 2025 State WV on a scramble drill to the back of the end zone. Long would also connect with Dues again on a pretty 58-yard touchdown pass on a go ball that hit Dues right in stride. Long was also very lethal tonight with his legs scoring two touchdowns on scrambles of 23 and 34 yards. Long will see stiffer competition throughout the season but game one was a great start for the senior signal caller.
WR: Tyshawn Dues Tyshawn Dues 5'10" | 170 lbs | WR Hurricane | 2025 State WV ’25
Dues was the recipient of two JacQai Long JacQai Long 6'2" | 200 lbs | QB Hurricane | 2024 State WV TD throws and you could see why WVU just made him his first P5 offer this summer. Dues was able to get consistent separation and with his speed, he is a tough cover. He’ll have games against stiffer competition this season but game one was a great start for the 2025 receiver who had two touchdowns on two targets. Look for him to have some huge games this season among a very talented Hurricane War corp.
WR: Michael Terrell ’24
Hurricane receiver Michael Terrell was not on my radar until tonight but he really impressed me. Terrell is a smaller twitchy slot receiver but boy is he shifty. He’s very dangerous after the catch and very slippery with the ball in his hands. Terrell has the speed too to take it the distance on any given play and he made a couple of big plays tonight. It started on defense where he recovered his teammate’s fumble on an interception return but it was on offense where he shined. Terrell had a big 40-yard catch and run which saw him blow by multiple defenders and also had a big 19-yard catch in the two-minute drill before half where he executed a nice juke to break the play. I’ll be monitoring him this season in a loaded Hurricane WR room.
RB: Kylan Grace Kylan Grace 5'10" | 200 lbs | RB Hurricane | 2026 State WV ’26
Grace showed tonight why he’s our #1 ranked running back in the 2026 class. He carried the load early on as the passing game was still getting going and Grace ran really hard. He plunged into the end zone from a yard out for a touchdown in the first quarter. Grace also had a big 21-yard run later on breaking several tackles. Hurricane didn’t need his services for very long but he will have some big performances this season for the Redskins.
WR: Landon Taylor Landon Taylor 6'0" | 210 lbs | RB Hurricane | 2026 State WV ’26
Talented sophomore receiver Landon Taylor Landon Taylor 6'0" | 210 lbs | RB Hurricane | 2026 State WV is still behind some very good Hurricane receivers but he got some action in the second half. Taylor is a 2026 athlete that we are high on and is currently ranked 12th overall and the #3 receiver in the 2026 class. Taylor had a huge 75-yard touchdown in the 4th quarter after the previous one was called back due to holding. He’s going to be a player for the Redskins once they graduate some serious talent ahead of him but he has a bright future there.
RB: Elijah Samples Elijah Samples 6'1" | 200 lbs | RB Hurricane | 2024 State WV ’24
An underrated senior for the Hurricane Redskins is 2024 RB/LB Elijah Samples Elijah Samples 6'1" | 200 lbs | RB Hurricane | 2024 State WV . He’s a little overshadowed by talented 2026 Kylan Grace Kylan Grace 5'10" | 200 lbs | RB Hurricane | 2026 State WV but Samples is talented too. He had a very nice 60-yard TD run where he broke a couple of tackles at the line of scrimmage before outrunning every defender on his way to the end zone. Samples is a tough runner who is hard to bring down on first contact but also has the speed to outrun a lot of defenders. He might fly under the radar on a loaded Hurricane team but he’s worthy of checking out.
K: Grayson Maddox ’24
I always love to show specialists some love and 2024 kicker Grayson Maddox caught my eye tonight. He had several touchbacks on kickoff and has a powerful leg. Maddox isn’t asked to placekick but I’m confident he has the ability to if asked. He boomed some kicks into the end zone and really thwarted the Winfield kick return chances.
Winfield Generals
QB: Chase Massey Chase Massey 6'2" | 175 lbs | ATH Winfield | 2024 State WV ’24
It was tough sledding for the Winfield Offense tonight but they won’t see another team as talented as Hurricane all season. There will be more opportunities for Massey to showcase his skills but you saw flashes at times tonight that intrigue you. I had heard he was fast and he proved that tonight against a stout Hurricane defense. The Redskins controlled the line of scrimmage most of the night but Massey ripped off a huge 44-yard run before halftime and showed off some elusiveness. Massey is dangerous when he gets out on the edge and will have some monster-rushing games this year. He also made a few nice throws but unfortunately, his receivers let him down at times with drops.
RB: Gannon Boggs Gannon Boggs 5'5" | 135 lbs | RB Winfield | 2027 WV ’27
I tell you what, Winfield might have something with 2027 running back Gannon Boggs Gannon Boggs 5'5" | 135 lbs | RB Winfield | 2027 WV down the road if he continues to develop and get bigger. He’s not a starter but came into the game when things got out of control for the Generals and had a few nice plays. Boggs had a nice run of 10+ yards and was able to slip by the defense in the passing game for a big gain. His name was called a lot in the second half and a name to watch for the future.
