This week’s slate of players to watch in the Catawba River Region include two running backs who have come out of the gate with strong performances, quarterbacks who will be looking to emerge as consistent threats for their respective offenses and standouts on the defensive line who will get to the quarterback often.
CJ McCree | DL | Chester
McCree has 21 tackles in two games so far and is one of the leaders of the Cyclone defense, along with Antonio Hopkins Antonio Hopkins 5'11" | 180 lbs | LB Chester | 2024 State SC , who is right behind him at the linebacker spot with 19. The duo will be tricky for offensive lines to handle.
Elijah Coleman Elijah Coleman 5'9" | 200 lbs | RB Clover | 2024 State SC | RB | Chester
Coleman is currently averaging 159.5 yards and 4 touchdowns per game in just two games of action. The Cyclones’ run-first offense has been a great fit for the Legion Collegiate transfer so far, and we will see if that trend continues on Friday.
Javarus Gutherie | RB | York
Gutherie was patient and ran right behind his blockers time and time again in the Cougars’ season opening win over Nation Ford last week. He can burn you with his quickness. But be careful to not get too caught up with him because Triston Barnett and Ayden Davis Ayden Davis 6'0" | 170 lbs | QB York | 2024 State SC showed they’ve got wheels on them as well.
Jayden Bryant Jayden Bryant 6'4" | 215 lbs | DL Clover | 2024 State SC | DL | Clover
The Coastal Carolina commit had 6 solo tackles last week against Northwestern. And the Blue Eagles will continue to involve him as much as they can along with Dillon McCoy, who had 7 solo tackles.
Kaleb White Kaleb White 5'9" | 205 lbs | LB Nation Ford | 2025 State SC | RB | Nation Ford
White ran hard despite the Falcons’ 30-14 loss to York on Friday night. He has a burst in between the tackles that is fun to watch. Keep an eye on Josh Ameo at receiver as well.
Landon Stone Landon Stone 6'0" | 200 lbs | RB Clover | 2025 State SC | RB | Clover
Stone (pictured above) ran for 126 yards and one touchdown in the Blue Eagles’ 56-12 loss to Northwestern to open the season. He figures to be one of the featured weapons in coach Perry Woolbright’s offense in 2023.
Malachi Marshall Malachi Marshall 6'2" | 190 lbs | QB South Pointe | 2024 State SC | QB | South Pointe
Marshall threw two touchdown passes of 7 and 25 yards in last week’s 35-13 win over Rock Hill. He’ll be looking to continue that trend and then some as the Stallions head to Gaffney and The Reservation on Friday.
Matthew Wilson Matthew Wilson 6'1" | 200 lbs | QB Rock Hill | 2024 State SC | QB | Rock Hill
Wilson connected with EJ Ratley for a 79-yard TD pass in the Bearcats’ loss to South Pointe last week. Look for this connection to continue this week as Ratley can beat you with his speed once he gets out in the open field.
