Highland @ Basha
Two state champs from a year ago along with two of the best QB’s in the state with Demond Williams Demond Williams 5'11" | 180 lbs | QB Basha | 2024 State AZ and Kalen Fisher Kalen Fisher 6'4" | 200 lbs | QB Highland | 2025 State AZ go head to head on Friday night, which will be a super fun game to cover. Don’t sleep on either defense either, as both teams have guys that can fly around and be those game changers. Williams has Basha rolling and has done so since his freshman year. They’re hot off a blowout 66-7 win over Westwood and are bumping up their odds to repeat as state champs. Highland comes off a 45-14 win over Mountain Ridge and continue to open eyes from all aspects. With Fisher leading the offense, Highland should also make a strong run here in 2023, possibly even putting themselves in a playoff spot in the open division. They certainly have the talent and coaching to get there, and this will be a huge test for a scrappy, explosive Highland squad.
Corona del Sol @ Centennial
Connor Ackerley Connor Ackerley 6'1" | 175 lbs | QB Corona Del Sol | 2024 State AZ and Raiden Vines-Bright Raiden Vines-Bright 6'0" | 170 lbs | WR Corona Del Sol | 2025 FL will get an opportunity to toe to toe with one of the best defenses in the state. They’ll have to be better than they were last week against this D though, as they come off a 14-0 win over Casa Grande. Centennial is rolling as they come off a 13-0 win over Desert Edge. To shut anyone out is impressive, none less an explosive team like Desert Edge that is loaded with division 1 prospects. Noah Carter Noah Carter 6'3" | 225 lbs | DL Centennial | 2024 State AZ will look to have a big week against an explosive receiver in Vinesbright, which will be one of the best WR-DB matchups we’ll see all year. Offensively, I do expect centennial to get it going more and put up more points than last week. Both of these teams could potentially be open division teams, and although it’s only week 2, this game could be a deciding factor at the end of the year if which one can get into the open.
Brophy @ Cathedral Catholic (CA)
Both teams are looking to bounce back after close losses last week. Brophy dropped a heartbreaker 35-34 loss last week to Williams Field, and you have to believe they’re coming in looking to do some damage here in week 2. Brophy is a team with a ton of talent on both sides of the ball that is having to have some new faces step up and fill bigger roles. Charlie McGinnis has a big opportunity this year to rise his stock and lead Brophy to be a contender in 6A, and has a few guys to throw to that are looking the part. Christian Camarata Christian Camarata 5'10" | 175 lbs | WR Brophy | 2025 State AZ has been progressing super quick and possesses a ton of twitch and burst, molding into your ideal slot. I think those two can be the difference makers offensively this week, and throughout the year. Cathedral Catholic dropped a close 40-30 game last week against a tough Chaminade team, bumping their record to 1-1. They’d love nothing more than to defend their home turf in Cali and beat an AZ team, and it’ll be an interesting one to follow.
