In this article, I will be previewing the Franklin Lightning in Portland, Oregon. They are a part of the 6A conference.
Franklin’s head coach is Adam Grimes, who is entering his first season as the head coach of the Lightning. Adam Grimes is replacing Jamal Jones, who finished with a record of 4-4 as Franklin’s head coach last season. Grimes was hired as Franklin’s new head coach in April of 2023. Grimes served as an assistant coach for Franklin for the past few seasons. He is a tenured coach who began coaching in 2006 as an assistant football coach for Lincoln. At Lincoln, Grimes was a wide receivers coach, special teams coordinator, and also played a huge role in Lincoln’s offensive game planning and execution. Grimes was additionally an assistant coach at Centennial High School. At Centennial, Adam Grimes served as an offensive coordinator. Last season, the Lightning had a record of 4-4, including an in-league record of 3-4. Franklin didn’t make the playoffs last year.
Franklin lost a decent amount of talent from their squad last year. Below is a list of talented players that have left their program:
Will Davis
Will Davis
Will Davis is a 6’3, 307-pound offensive lineman who graduated from Franklin in 2023. Davis is on his way to Idaho State University to play Division One football for the Bengals. Davis is a force to be reckoned with, as he is a powerful lineman who is extremely athletic and talented.
Joel Beltran
Joel Beltran
Joel Beltran is a 5’9 180-pound wide receiver who graduated from Franklin in 2023. Beltran had an immense impact on this Franklin squad last year. He was extremely athletic, versatile and talented. Beltran played a variety of positions for Franklin, including wide receiver, running back, and strong safety.
Diego Galvez
Diego Galvez
Diego Galvez is a 5’11, 202-pound tight end and middle linebacker who graduated from Franklin in 2023. Galvez was a star for Franklin. He was extremely strong, determined, and resilient. Diego Galvez excelled as both a tight end and as a linebacker for the Lightning.
Below are four players that standout on Franklin’s squad this year:
Will Reid
Will Reid
Will Reid is a 6’0 190-pound quarterback who has a fast arm. Reid will be the starting quarterback for the Lightning this year as a senior. Reid is a poised quarterback who appears extremely comfortable under pressure and in the pocket. He is a dual threat quarterback who can throw on the run and can alleviate defensive pressure with ease. Another thing that makes Reid special is the combination of his extreme speed and size. At 6,0, 190 pounds, Reid is a sizable quarterback who is also quite talented. Will Reid had 11 TD’s, 1,540 yards and was also 11th in Oregon for passing yards last season. Reid was additionally named second team All-PIL as a junior. Watch out for Franklin’s Will Reid, as he will have a massive impact this season.
Max Wallace
Max Wallace
Max Wallace is a 5’10, 160-pound senior defensive back and wide receiver. His elite athleticism and supersonic speed make him different. Wallace is a shifty athlete and solid route runner who has steady hands. Last season, Wallace was named first team All-Conference receiver, and he was top 10 in Oregon 6A and was also impressively the league leader in receiving yards. Wallace is a standout on both sides of the field. Wallace is being scouted; he has an offer from Carleton Football, which is a division three program. Last season Wallace was quarterback Will Reid’s biggest target; he recorded 618 yards on 39 catches in eight appearances for the Lightning last season. Wallace also had three touchdowns. Max Wallace is bound to have a breakout season as a senior for Franklin.
Cash Landau Cash Landau 6’4″ | 230 lbs | TE Franklin | 2025 State OR is a 6’3, 210-pound junior. He has a huge impact on both sides of the field as both a wide receiver, defensive back, and safety. Landau’s ball tracking ability is fantastic. He had a handful of interceptions and a lot of pass deflections last season for the Lightning, exemplifying that he is an exceptional defender who has great awareness. Cash Landau Cash Landau 6’4″ | 230 lbs | TE Franklin | 2025 State OR is also extremely versatile, agile, fast, in addition to being quite strong. Landau will definitely have a massive impact on both sides of the field for the Franklin Lightning this season.
Josiah Heinztman
Josiah Heinztman
Josiah Heinztman is a powerful running back and linebacker who is quick and strong. Franklin will utilize him as their starting or back-up running back this season. Heinzman is one of Franklin’s best players, and he can effortlessly break tackles and power through defenses. His versatility and strength as a power back makes him unique. Look out for Heinztman, as he will have an increased role in Franklin’s offense this season.
Franklin’s 2023 squad is an inspired and special group of talented players who are determined to make the playoffs this year. They are a motivated team with coach Adam Grimes at the helm. The Franklin Lightning will kick off their season at home on September 1 at 7:00 P.M. against Gresham.
