Coaches have taken notice of the prospects below, but I am surprised every player on this list does not hold more offers. Expect each of these five defensive backs to be heavily recruited going into 2024. Below, I detail why these specific prospects are set to be breakout stars as seniors.
Devin Wilson Devin Wilson 5’11” | 200 lbs | DB Lee’s Summit West | 2024 State MO is a three-sport athlete out of Lee’s Summit West. I believe the versatile defender best projects to safety in college. Devin holds offers from Benedictine College and the University of Central Missouri. Expect more schools close to Missouri to recruit Devin before his senior season is finished.
Good instincts in the box and power as a tackler highlight Devin’s ability to be a versatile safety at the next level. Next level strength and acceleration shows disrupting outside runs as a blitzing outside linebacker. Quickness, good ball skills, and an explosive change of direction shows elevating to disrupt catches versus taller wide receivers.
Joshua Wilson
Joshua Wilson
Joshua Wilson is an unknown two-way prospect out of Jefferson City. Joshua competed at a camp at Lindenwood this summer, but I am surprised the good-sized defensive back has not received more attention. Look out for defensive coaches surrounding Missouri to recruit the talented cornerback before winter gets here.
Joshua shows good strength and next level acceleration breaking on underneath routes from deep zones and exploding through intended receivers upon arrival. Good instincts, quickness, and length show disrupting underneath throws while in zone coverage. Joshua’s quick feet and smooth change of direction displayed mirroring receivers in man coverage highlights his potential to play on an island at the next level.
Jermon Strickland
Jermon Strickland
Jermon Strickland is one of several talented playmakers on Blue Springs South’s defense. Jermon holds offers from William Penn and East Central University. He also attended a camp at Central Missouri, so be on the lookout for more schools in the region to recruit Jermon during his senior year.
Jermon shows a smooth change of direction and closing speed catching up to receivers who have beaten him vertically in zone coverage. Jermon displays good athleticism elevating at the catchpoint and mirroring ball carriers to easily complete open field tackles. Good burst, instincts, and physicality show attacking outside runs behind the line of scrimmage before ball carriers have a chance to create positive yardage.
Braylon Harden Braylon Harden 6’2″ | 185 lbs | DB Grain Valley | 2024 MO is a lockdown corner out of Grain Valley High School. Braylon holds offers from North Dakota, Northern Iowa, and four division two schools. Look for more offers in the region to come in before Braylon decides where to enroll in 2024.
Braylon shows good length, athletic ability, and ball skills ripping interceptions away from receivers in 50/50 ball situations. Good power and awareness shows disrupting the catchpoint when breaking on receivers from depth as a zone defender. Next level quickness and a fluid change of direction get displayed when Braylon breaks on underneath routes as an off man defender.
Highlights
Cameron Wray
Cameron Wray
Cameron Wray is my most underrated safety in Missouri. Cameron holds offers from Evangel University and Benedictine College. Cameron also attended a camp at Missouri State University in June. Watch for Cameron to receive more offers during his senior season and have his recruitment heat up before 2024 gets here.
Coaches love Cameron’s rare combination of size, athleticism, and instincts shown redirecting from deep middle zones to intercept passes targeting receivers near the sideline. Next level top speed and acceleration get displayed running through the middle of kickoff coverage teams untouched for a touchdown. Good strength, balance, and acceleration shows powering through second level traffic and breaking away for touchdowns as a receiver. Good power as a tackler and effort versus the run game highlights Cameron’s strong safety versatility at the next level.
