These are the types of players who posses that high football IQ and have groomed by their former coaches into the most reliable and trusted athletes on the football field. In today’s deep dive we take a look at some of the players out of the country who are not only technically sound on the football field, but have the innate ability to always make the right play or create the “big play”. These are the guys that could step in day one at the college level and look like they belong.
Liam Kelly Liam Kelly 6’3″ | 275 lbs | OL Bishop Reding | 2025 State CAD is instantly one of the first players I think of when thinking of someone who could show up on day 1 at the next level and start right away. As your prototype Center, Kelly stands in at about 6’3, 260-pounds and plays the game with not only an edge but a calm demeanour. Kelly lines up under center for the Burlington Stampeders club in the OSFL and consistently provides that first push in the run game that every football teams relies on. With a strong low center of gravity, and the ability to get second level with ease, Kelly is a player you can rely upon to get those extra couple yards in a 3rd and short situation.
William Russell
William Russell
When you think of reliable and a guy who could start day one at the next level it’s impossible not to include captain Canada himself in QB William Russell. The Ancaster, Ontario product is set to line up this coming fall as the renowned Football North’s QB1. With elite size and strength at 6’3, 215-pounds you will not find a better looking prospect nation wide. The mobile gun slinger plays the position with great calmness and ability to zip the ball off his hand with ease. The way Russell can spin it comes from being a high level pitcher in baseball. The biggest difference between the arm on Russell and the rest of the QB’s you see, is he can display that “zip” or ball rotation that many struggle to do. One of the biggest indicators of his movement on the ball is the finishing placement where his palm is almost fully flipped over facing upwards. Not only does he provide an incredible arm talent but he’s also playing the game in slow motion at times. When you combine those two traits, along with the fact that Russell has enough speed on the perimeter to get loose, it’s quite the deadly combo and recipe for a guy who you could plug and play right away at the next level.
Jeremiah Washington
Jeremiah Washington
Something that can make a Head Coach feel a lot better about playing a younger guy is when they posses that home run playmaking ability. Arguably, one of the most dangerous players in Canada when the football is in his hands is Choate Rosemary Hall’s newest Running back Jeremiah Washington. The former St. Thomas Moore stand out is what you consider a “one-touch back”. That means on any drive, the expectation is that all it will take is one touch and he’s off to the races. With 4.47, 40 speed and the shake to cut on a dime, Washington is a threat to score when he’s got the rock. Washington comes in at 5’10, 170 pounds but is the type of player a coach wants to have touching the ball early and often. When he gets to next level he’s going to need to add a bit of a power aspect in the zone run game, but make no doubt he’s an absolutely polished 2024 product.
