It's the month of July and that means it's preview time! Throughout the month of July and into August, we are publishing well over 100 in-depth team previews to get you completely ready for the 2023 football season. This is something that began in 2021 and has continued to get bigger every single year. We're looking forward to diving deep into the top teams across the state. From defending champions, to top contenders and plenty of dark horses, we'll have complete coverage every single day with new teams from Class 6A, all the way down to the addition of 8-man coverage this year with Class B and C. In this post, we take a look at the Hominy Bucks.

The Hominy Bucks will come into this season feeling like they have unfinished business after the way the 2022 season ended. The Bucks would go 13-1 and were one of the top teams in Class A all season and would make it all the way to the semifinal round. They would lose to Gore in the semifinals and the Pirates went on to fall short to Fairview in the title game. But immediately following the 2022 season, we looked at a team like Hominy and thought that they certainly have what it takes to contend for the state championship again in 2023. Like plenty of teams across the state, the Bucks have to find some new faces to step into new roles this season. But a big reason the Bucks find themselves as one of the favorites heading into this season was the return of one of the best football players in the state. But more on him a bit later.

The Bucks will be challenged this season by a tough district slate once again. Last year, you can make the argument that Hominy's district, A-5, was the most competitive district in Class A. And as we look ahead to the 2023 season, other teams within the district are going to reload and we could end up seeing this district being right back in that same position. The Bucks are right there with defending champion Fairview, Colcord and others when you talk about the top contenders in Class A. This is a proud football program that is ready to bring home another state championship. It's been nearly a decade since Zaven Collins led the Bucks all the way to the 2016 state championship. We could see another star quarterback do the same thing for the Bucks this fall.

Hipp became a big target within the Hominy offense and with a 6'5 frame, he's going to have a size advantage every time he steps on the football field. Hipp finished with just over 200 yards and three touchdowns and then turned around and nearly had 40 tackles on the defensive side of the ball. We think that the production is only going to go up this season and he's going to have an expanded role within the Hominy offense. The Bucks benefit from having plenty of firepower returning on offense and we think that Hipp could be a game changer.","_player_evaluations_0_evaluation":"field_62aba51aecf34","player_evaluations_1_player":["894205"],"_player_evaluations_1_player":"field_62ab9d62ecf2c","player_evaluations_1_override_profile_image":"","_player_evaluations_1_override_profile_image":"override-player-profile-image","player_evaluations_1_not_in_database":"","_player_evaluations_1_not_in_database":"field_62aba48cecf2d","player_evaluations_1_evaluation":"Similar to Hipp, the Bucks also bring back 2024 athlete Byron Marshall and he will provide the Bucks with plenty of playmaking ability this season. Last year, Marshall finished with over 500 yards of total offense and seven touchdowns. He made an impact in the passing and running game last fall. And he also turned around and was one of the team's leading tacklers with over 100 tackles on the season. Marshall is an absolute speedster and he'll use that to make plays this fall. In the spring, Marshall was one of the top sprinters in the state. He finished as the state runner up in the 100M dash. Speed is the name of the game for Marshall and when he gets the ball in the open field, fireworks could follow.","_player_evaluations_1_evaluation":"field_62aba51aecf34","player_evaluations_2_player":["386581"],"_player_evaluations_2_player":"field_62ab9d62ecf2c","player_evaluations_2_override_profile_image":"","_player_evaluations_2_override_profile_image":"override-player-profile-image","player_evaluations_2_not_in_database":"","_player_evaluations_2_not_in_database":"field_62aba48cecf2d","player_evaluations_2_evaluation":"We mentioned earlier that the Bucks return one of the best players in the state. 2024 quarterback and defensive back [player_tooltip player_id='386581' first='Jaxon' last='Woods'] is that player. He was one of the finalists for our PRZ-Oklahoma Player Of The Year award and took home the award for Class A players last season. He was arguably the most productive player in the state. He had over 2,100 yards passing and 22 touchdowns while completing nearly 70 percent of his passes. He also added nearly 2,000 yards and 33 touchdowns on the ground. Then on defense he had 75 tackles, 7 interceptions and took back five punts for touchdowns. He can certainly carry the Bucks all the way to a title, much like Zaven Collins in 2016.","_player_evaluations_2_evaluation":"field_62aba51aecf34","player_evaluations_3_player":["894206"],"_player_evaluations_3_player":"field_62ab9d62ecf2c","player_evaluations_3_override_profile_image":"","_player_evaluations_3_override_profile_image":"override-player-profile-image","player_evaluations_3_not_in_database":"","_player_evaluations_3_not_in_database":"field_62aba48cecf2d","player_evaluations_3_evaluation":"The Bucks don't just have firepower returning on offense, 2024 linebacker [player_tooltip player_id='894206' first='Ryder' last='Edwards'] is back on the defensive side of the ball and brings plenty of experience and production back with him. In addition to Marshall, Edwards was one of the team's leading tacklers last season with nearly 90 tackles on the season. The Bucks grabbed plenty of headlines last season because of Woods and the production on offense, but the defense was lights out last season as well. Edwards will head into this season, looking to make sure that the defense doesn't miss a step and are one of the better units in Class A for the second consecutive season.","_player_evaluations_3_evaluation":"field_62aba51aecf34","player_evaluations":4,"_player_evaluations":"field_62aba7547dc44"},"mode":"edit","alignText":"left","anchor":"acf-block-64a5a270a0322"} /-->

Aug. 25 - Kellyville
Aug. 31 - AT Cleveland
Sept. 8 - Pawhuska
- These area rivals will square off again in week two as Hominy gears up for another gauntlet run within arguably the toughest district in Class A. Before they take a week off and dive head first into district play, they'll host a Pawhuska team that's going to have quite a few new names on both sides of the ball. But this has been a rivalry that has been incredibly competitive over the last few decades and more recently, the Huskies have had Hominy's number. The Bucks have won two out of the last three but those wins came by a combined seven points. They'll look to prove a point in this year's clash.
Sept. 22 - Pawnee
Sept. 29 - AT Oklahoma Union
Oct. 6 - Morrison
Oct. 12 - AT Chelsea
Oct. 20 - AT Tonkawa
- Prior to last season, the redistricting shuffle put Hominy and Tonkawa in the same district and added more competition to this already deep district. And last season, this two-week stretch late in the season was the toughest stretch in Hominy's undefeated regular season. It started in week eight when they narrowly defeated Tonkawa. This season, Tonkawa is once again considered one of the better teams in Class A and the Bucks will have their work cut out for them. The Bucks do benefit from having an extra day to prepare after the Fall Break game on Thursday the week before.
Oct. 27 - Woodland
- One week after the tough test on the road against Tonkawa, Hominy will return home and host Woodland. These two teams feel like the best of the best in this district as we head into the 2023 season. If the Bucks are still unbeaten in district play by the time this match-up rolls around, they should be able to lock up the district championship with a win here in week nine. This has been a back and forth series between the Bucks and Cougars over the last decade. Hominy beat Woodland 33-20 last season after losing to Woodland in their previous two meetings. This should be a very entertaining game.
Nov. 3 - AT Chouteau

Notable

It depends on how you look at the 2020 football season in Oklahoma but Hominy will be looking for their 26th consecutive playoff appearance or their 3rd consecutive appearance. Technically, Hominy earned their way in the 2020 playoffs but they never actually played a game in the postseason. They advanced after their first playoff game against Afton was forfeited due to Covid. And the following week, they were scheduled to play Pawhuska but would have to forfeit because of Covid. So again, it depends on how you look at it. They were in the playoffs but never played in the playoffs. Our official opinion? They were in the playoffs and the streak remains intact. So in our minds, they'll be looking for their 26th consecutive playoff appearance this fall, a streak dating back to the late 90's and one of the longer active streaks in Oklahoma today.
