We continue to scroll through the rankings and social media in search of as many under the radar prospects that we can find. In today’s article we dive into the defensive back group. This is a special group with very talented prospects that are still working towards earning offers; some even their first. Coaches, the film is included with each athlete. Please give them a look! Let’s get started!
The 6′ 190 lbs safety is one of the state’s top hidden gems overall. He has multiple clips that prove his three level versatility. Against the run he can come down and play in the box or off the edge. He is able to maneuver and make blockers miss on his way to the RB. Elijah can also line up deep and has the range to be able to attack downhill and make tackles at the line against the run. Romeus also brings the ability to cover the slot man to man. He has the fluid hips to turn and run with them downfield and the closing speed is there so he can bait QBs into bad decisions. Lastly, Elijah is a reliable tackler who you can count on to be the last line of defense. Give his tape a look.
Highlights
Corey excels in coverage. He has proven to be a reliable defender in both man and zone coverage. In man to man, Corey has quick feet, loose hips, and strong reactive athleticism to see the break of the receiver and run through it with them as it happens. Taubr has a burst out of his changes of direction that stands out on tape. He goes from 0 to 100 as soon as he sticks that back foot in the ground. In zone coverage, Corey reads and reacts very quickly. He trusts his abilities and that allows him to bait the QB. His play speed and closing speed give him all the necessary range to play a deep half at the next level.
Highlights
Ryan spent 2022 aligned primarily in the slot. His highlights are full of clips showing the quickness needed to play with the agile athletes that typically line up there. Ryan has quick feet, isn’t afraid to get physical at the line, and demonstrates great timing with his hands to break up passes. Starck is also a reliable run stuffer from the slot. When he reads run, Ryan is aggressive as he fights through blocks and wraps up ball carriers. In 2022 Starck played at 200 lbs. He is currently listed at 210 lbs, so expect his stoutness off the edge and tackling overall to continue to be strong points of his game.
The first thing that jumps off the tape from the 5’9″ 160 lbs DB is the poise he plays with. He is decisive and trusts what he reads. Darrell has proven that he can be counted on in man coverage or to play a deep half of the field. While in man coverage, Darrell has the play speed to be able to run deep and the quick feet to break with the receiver. Darrell is also explosive at the catch point. He can go up and attack the ball at the high point and has the hand eye coordination to get his hands on the ball. Zone coverage is where you really see that decisive play. He reads the QB and breaks on the ball without hesitation. His speed gives him the necessary range and the timing to attack the ball to force breakups is strong.
Highlights
William is only 5’8″, so he may not fit the mold of what teams look for. However, good luck finding examples of it hampering his play. Korosec plays with the confidence you need in a corner that plays a lot of man to man coverage. William won’t hesitate to press at the line, and he has the quick feet and long speed to be able to mirror receivers through their routes. A key piece to his game is how explosive he is. At the catch point, William can play above the rim and go get the ball. Even when matched up against bigger receivers William has shown he can fight through a box out and get to the ball. Korosec has the dog in him that you look for in players that might not have the perfect frame for the position.
Our final under the radar prospect is the big safety out of Downers Grove South. Dylan is 6’3″ 195 lbs safety. Dylan predominantly lines up deep, and then uses his range to make his plays. His 4.6 speed and quick play diagnosis allow him to play all over the field. He is aggressive when he reads run or WR screen and is a reliable tackler in space. The physical safety can also play close to the line of scrimmage in the redzone. In coverage, Dylan excels at giving help over the top. He sees the field well, and has the ball skills to create turnovers at the catch point. Give the big safety a look.
