Sights and Sounds: Silver City 7×7 Jamboree

<p>SILVER CITY, NM -- Silver High School hosted a 10-team Jamboree Saturday at a sports complex located across the street from the high school. The schools participating included Silver (1 & 2), Cobre, Deming, Gadsden, Hatch Valley, Hot Springs, Las Cruces, Lordsburg and Morenci (AZ).</p>

<p>The Las Cruces Bulldawgs were the marquee team and Saturday's event offered an opportunity to see how the quarterback battle between <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='853029' first='Gunnar' last='Guardiola']</strong> and <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='615513' first='Kelly' last='Stevens']</strong> is progressing. Both quarterbacks rotated in throughout the day and each showed enough to believe the battle is going to extend deep into preseason camp. If Guardiola has an edge, he has game experience from last season. Las Cruces is looking to turn things around following a disappointing 2022 season when they failed to make the playoffs. </p>

<p>Class 4A runner-up Silver, on the other hard, knows exactly who their starting quarterback will be. Six-foot-3 signal caller <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='815932' first='Adan' last='Jacquez']</strong> stands tall in the pocket and rifles the ball to an array of sure-handed receivers. Colts head coach Jerome Ortiz is justified in believing Silver's offense will be just as productive as last season, though they might do it in a different way compared to last season when the Colts relentlessly ran the ball behind a talented backfield trio, all of whom have graduated.</p>

<p>Unlike Silver, Gadsden has four quarterbacks battling to fill the large void left by Tomas Herrera, one of the most dynamic playmakers in Class 5A last season. Whoever wins the job has large shoes to fill. Bolstered by new facilities, Deming is looking to take the next step and advance to the 5A championship game in 2023 after reaching the semifinals last fall. Hatch Valley has a new head coach ([player_tooltip player_id='1120809' first='Manny' last='Rodriguez']) while Hot Springs is searching for a new head coach. Assistants led the shorthanded and extremely young Tigers in Silver City.</p>
