This morning I ventured out to Omaha Central HS to check out the Eagles competing against the new kids on the block, Gretna East. Omaha Central is a team to watch out for in Class A as they feature a new coaching staff and an influx of great talent. Gretna East is only a few weeks into its first offseason as a program and will be kicking off its inaugural season in the fall. Central has some great senior skill positions players, but where they and Gretna East really shine is their depth of talent in their ’25-’27 groups.
Omaha Central Takeaways
– 2025 TE/DE Ike Ackerman Ike Ackerman 6'3" | 215 lbs | ATH Omaha Central | 2025 State NE once again stood out big time. He was a mismatch nightmare, no matter where you line him up. He is tough to beat on comebacks/curl routes, where he does a great job of boxing out his defender and using his long arms and big hands to make catches away from his body.
– 2025 CB Anthony Liggins Anthony Liggins DB Omaha Central | 2025 State NE is going to be a name to watch this season. He is already one of the top DB prospects in the 2025 class but has really stepped it up this summer, fine-tuning his craft and adding some more mass to his frame. Very instinctive and vocal on the field. He can pick up on shifts and can identify receiver routes/concepts.
– 2026 QB BJ Newsome BJ Newsome 5'11" | 185 lbs | QB Omaha Central | 2026 State NE looks way more confident and poised this season. He trusts his arm and his reads while also learning about the new offense.
– 2024 LB Kevon Newsome Kevon Newsome 6'1" | 215 lbs | LB Omaha Central | 2024 State NE did an excellent job patrolling the middle of the field. He showed great range and mobility while picking up any receivers coming across on slants and underneath routes.
Gretna East Takeaways
– The Griffins backfield is a very impressive-looking group. Mason Gunn Mason Gunn 5'8" | 185 lbs | RB Gretna East | 2025 State NE and Connor Sams Connor Sams 5'10" | 195 lbs | LB Gretna East | 2026 State NE both had great plays, including a nice, long receiving touchdown out of the backfield for Sams. Gunn and Sams are the likely 1-2 punch you’ll see this season, with incoming freshman Quinten Malone also possibly getting some reps.
– Even with such a young group, the Gretna East secondary had quite a few bright spots today. Caden Annis Caden Annis 5'10" | 145 lbs | ATH Gretna East | 2026 NE , Seth Kragel, and Aiden Vaughn Aiden Vaughn 5'11" | 170 lbs | DB Gretna East | 2026 NE were the only names I caught, but there were several players that played very well. I wasn’t able to get the names of a few players, but there were great reads by corners, jumping routes to force the PBU, and aggressiveness at the catch point… all very good things.
– QB Logan Kracht Logan Kracht 6'1" | 160 lbs | QB Millard West | 2026 State NE looked solid despite the offense not having had much time together. He would look off his first read and advance through his progressions.
– Is this a young and varsity-inexperienced group? Yea. However, this is a team full of smart, versatile, two-way players that already play at a high level, add in a great coaching staff, and this should be a dangerous team sooner rather than later.
