With SCHSL football spread over five classifications and 36 regions, the talent pool in South Carolina is as vast as it is diverse.

We're going to tackle it unlike ever before.

The Prep Red Zone South Carolina team is going to predict every team's MVP for the 2023 football season. Over the next several weeks, you're going to be able to read about which player is leading the way for his team. We'll even give you a whole bunch of highlight films to back up our predictions.

Are you ready?

REGION III-4A

Catawba Ridge Copperheads

Jordan Gilliam DB

Gilliam will be one of the leaders on the Copperheads' defense in 2023. He has the instincts and coverage skills you need at the defensive back position. He reacts quickly when the ball is in the air and can come up in run support well. He finished the season with 5 interceptions, 15 pass breakups and 25+ tackles. If he doesn't get his hands on the ball, keep an eye on [player_tooltip player_id='595831' first='Rasean' last='Marajah'] on the defensive line, who wreaked havoc in 2022 and we expect him to do the same in 2023. Gilliam has offers from Wingate University and North Greenville University.

Indian Land Warriors

[player_tooltip player_id='139305' first='Jaden' last='Singletary'] RB

Singletary had an excellent 2022 campaign in the Indians' run first offense. He ran for 1249 yards and 14 touchdowns. On defense, he finished with 101 tackles and 2 sacks with 1 fumble recovery for a touchdown. He is another dynamic two way player that will be the focal point when you watch the Indians in 2023.

Lancaster Bruins

[player_tooltip player_id='1142778' first='Mikal' last='McCollum'] RB

McCollum is a force at the running back position for the Bruins. He can run through contact and keep his legs moving. He's more of a power back when he first gets going in the hole and then he can burn you with his speed once he gets into the open field.

Northwestern Trojans

[player_tooltip player_id='265222' first='Turbo' last='Richard'] RB

Richard has the perfect combo of speed and power – arm tackles won't work against him. He had an excellent junior season as he ran for 2093 yards and 24 touchdowns, averaging 139.5 yards per game in 2022. He will have another star that will lead the Trojans' offense in 2023: [player_tooltip player_id='241044' first='Finley' last='Polk']. Richard's running ability should take the pressure off when teams try to defend against the pass game. The college offer list is numerous for him as Wake Forest and Boston College have offered, just to name a few.

South Pointe Stallions

[player_tooltip player_id='771038' first='Malachi' last='Marshall'] QB

After throwing for 2140 yards and 20 touchdowns in 2022, Marshall (pictured above) is back for his senior season with his dynamic arm and ability to make throws on the run. He'll have an emerging downfield threat that we saw in the spring in Jordan Curbeam. Colleges have been taking notice during the spring as he has narrowed his list down to Marshall, James Madison, Georgia Southern, Middle Tennessee State and Georgia State.

On defense for the Stallions, keep an eye on [player_tooltip player_id='212416' first='J'Zavien' last='Currence'], who we expect to have a big year at defensive back. He has an offer from Florida State University.

York Cougars

[player_tooltip player_id='208367' first='Ayden' last='Davis'] ATH
York coach Dean Boyd told us during spring practice that he expects Davis to be utilized on both sides of the ball in 2023. That's how dynamic he is. He can run the zone read at quarterback – he has run for 37 touchdowns over the last two years. He can catch the ball and get up field at receiver and break a pass up at defensive back. If he takes snaps on offense, he'll be alongside [player_tooltip player_id='267449' first='Debo' last='Hall'] and Zadarrius Carter, who are both downfield threats.
