And that means another group of freshmen will start their high school careers with dreams of going on to play college football in the future. There are some really talented young men that could make some waves on Varsity in their first year on campus, while some will be destined to be names that we constantly hear over the next few years. This is a two-part series here in June, our first look will be at players in the immediate Charlotte area.
Caleb Kearney Caleb Kearney 6'2" | 150 lbs | WR Palisades | 2027 State NC – Wide Receiver – Palisades High School
Standing at 6’2, he stands out because he has already received a Division 1 offer from Virginia Tech, a rare feat for a rising freshman in itself. Reports say that Caleb has some impressive speed on the outside, and that always is something that can help you stand out. Palisades is in its second year of being a high school, so we’ll see if Caleb can help make some history on the southwest side of Charlotte.
Davion Jones Davion Jones 6'1" | 160 lbs | WR West Charlotte | 2027 NC – Athlete – West Charlotte High School
Watching some videos on Davion was very impressive – I put him in the athlete category because he made a lot of plays on both sides of the ball. As a Defensive Back, he excelled in winning 50/50 balls against Wide Receivers in the air. He also was not afraid to come up and support on the run. As a Wide Receiver, Davion showed some long speed to win against Cornerbacks on deep balls. He shows some very good agility and is strong with his 6-foot frame.
Michael Griffin – Running Back – Chambers High School
I enjoyed watching some film on Michael – he is already a load at 5’9 and 190 pounds and he runs behind his pads well. He just is a punishing runner, but he also has good speed in the open field to run away from defenders for big plays. For such a young back, he shows some very good vision – sometimes with a young big back they just get used to running through people, but that’s definitely not the case with Michael.
Charles Ibe Charles Ibe 6'1" | 280 lbs | DL Providence Day | 2027 State NC – Defensive Line – Ardrey Kell High School
Young linemen typically take a little more time to develop, but Ibe came to me highly suggested by several people, and seeing how well he moves already for his size, I can see why. He stands at 6’0 and 250 pounds, and I like his quickness off of the football for sure. He uses his hands well, and it is evident he has received some really good coaching. I’m excited to see how he grows over the next couple of years.
Keland Shelton Jr – Wide Receiver – North Mecklenburg High School
A 6’2 185 pound prospect, I have been very impressed with what I’ve seen out of this young man. He can already high-point the football very well as a strength – he posted a highlight today where he takes the ball for a game-winning touchdown. He runs good routes, catches the ball away from his body, and shows enough speed to win on the deep ball against 1 on 1 coverage. Definitely, one to watch for sure.
