We are getting closer and closer to the 2023 season every day, and with it, my excitement continues to skyrocket. In the lead-up to the 2023 season, I will be doing a position preview feature. This feature will jump around by class and district while highlighting different position groups in that district.
Our position previews continue with a look at the QBs in district A-2. A-2 features both Bellevue schools, Gretna, Omaha South, and Papio South.
Bellevue East
The Chieftains will be looking for a new signal-caller after the departure of presumed starter Mikey Gow. Bellevue East will have a few options at QB. One of them is to stick with Mr. Football

who took over the QB1 spot after Mikey’s season-ending injury. Mason served the Chieftains well, given the circumstances, and provided them a rushing threat from under center. He may take the offseason to continue developing as a passer. Another option is having one of the young QBs take the reigns of the offense. Incoming junior

is an interesting player who has shown he has serious arm talent. He performs very well at camps and has been waiting in the wings for his shot.

returning under center. Daniel set Class A defenses ablaze last season, leading one of the most prolific passing attacks in the state. Kaelin plays the game at a high level both physically and mentally. He has the arm talent to make any throw on the field while also possessing the football IQ to read and break down defenses. Kaelin recently made a huge announcement with his commitment to play for the Huskers after de-committing from Mizzou. There’s a special season brewing for Kaelin. won’t likely see a ton of varsity time with Kaelin, but he will be someone to watch on the recruiting circuit. He broke out as one of the top 2026 prospects last season and is only starting to scratch the surface.

Gretna
The Dragons have the tall task of replacing arguably one of the best QB prospects to come out of Nebraska in Zane Flores. It won’t be easy, but I’m confident the Gretna coaches will have whoever steps up, ready to go Week 1. The Dragons will also be dealing with a roster split (which I am not 100% confident who went where) with the new Gretna East which also took some of their young QBs. Senior

looks like the favorite to take over starting role as he was the backup to Flores last season. Wilcoxson is a great overall athlete who was a stud cornerback on defense and a standout on the hardwood as well. Junior

will also be a name to watch out for as a challenger for the starting spot and least as a very serviceable backup.

Omaha South
Omaha South boasted one of the more explosive offenses in Class A last season with featured a 2,000-yard passer and two 1,000-yard receivers. Unfortunately, the Packers will have to replace all three of those players this offseason. Last season’s starter Daeshawn Tolbert has graduated and moved on and left a big void on the offense. The next man expected to take the QB1 spot transferred to another school leaving an open battle for the spot.
Papillion-La Vista South
Papillion-La Vista South will lose a great 2023 class that featured several great players at key positions. One position they can breathe easy about is the QB spot where they can expect senior

to continue to develop in their system. Sam had a solid junior season leading the Titans to a 6-4 record and a playoff appearance, while throwing for 1,428 passing yards, 13 passing touchdowns, 126 QBR, and 3 rushing touchdowns. Sam showed really good mobility out of the pocket with the ability to throw on the run. He also did a great job protecting the ball and showed solid efficiency as a passer with 64% passing completion. With an offseason to iron out the details, I’m expecting a sharper, meaner Sam next season.
