AMARILLO -- As a Class 4A school, Amarillo (TX) West Plains isn't allowed to wear full football pads during spring practice, so they do the next best thing – happily put on shirts and shorts and enthusiastically compete in 7-on-7 and other non-contact drills.

We caught up with the Wolves Friday afternoon for their workout on the practice field adjacent to the year-old school located in West Amarillo.

West Plains is now in their third week of spring workouts.

“We have a lot of kids playing baseball right now,” West Plains defensive coordinator David Sutterfield told Prep Redzone Texas following practice. “We haven't had our full group thus far this spring. But our guys do a pretty good job stepping in and playing different positions so we can get reps.”

Competing in 7-on-7 has allowed West Plains to install key components of the offense and defense, Sutterfield said.

“Mainly, all we're trying to do is refresh our kids on what our offensive and defensive schemes are,” Sutterfield said. “So, when we go into the summer when we have about 30 minutes per day, four days per week with our players, we can hit the ground running. When early August arrives, we're not having to install stuff. When Aug. 1 comes and we begin preseason camp, we want to be going full steam ahead.”

Sutterfield helped supervise Friday's workout along with offensive coordinator Jeff Lyles in the absence of head coach Adam Cummings, who accompanied the West Plains baseball team to Lubbock for its playoff game against Greenwood.

Among the West Plains football players not participating in Friday's practice was rising sophomore quarterback Reid Macon, who also plays baseball. Macon threw for 2,273 yards and 19 TD in leading the Wolves to a 7-5 season and the second round of the Class 4A, Div. 2 playoffs in the school's first year of existence.

“The biggest difference for us offensively between now and last year is we have an identity,” Lyles told Prep Redzone Texas. “The kids know what to expect when we walk onto the field and what plays we're going to run. We play fast and try to play with tempo. We bounce around and get a lot of reps in a 45-minute time period. Everybody talks about Reid but we have two other quarterbacks that are very capable. They know how to run the offense.”

West Plains' base scheme is the spread with a pro-style rushing attack, Air Raid concepts and RPO mixed in.

“We have a young quarterback who understands and can digest defenses,” Lyles said. “At the end of the day, we want to be physical and try to run the ball and throw screens out wide and block on the edge. We want to do the simple things well. That hopefully translates into yards and points.”
