Illinois came through with a strong turnout of submission. So much so that I will be doing multiple parts to this series. This first batch are names that college coaches need to make themselves aware of if they haven't already. In today's article I want to focus on his play at DL. There are solid traits starting to show through the freshman's highlights. The first is his first step burst. Judah gets out of his stance very quickly.That burst pairs with his ovearll acceleration leading to his ability to fly through gaps before the OL can get their hands on him. Van Engen also has the range to be able to chase down the QB or ball carriers in the backfield. He demonstrated the strength to split double teams as well as to create separation from OL in one on one blocks. He has a solid get off at the snap. Tyshaun is a sound tackler, and he is willing to attack downhill towards the line of scrimmage to stop the run. Tyshaun also has reliable hands to be able to generate turnovers in the passing game. I also liked his awareness and ability to read the QB and react quickly. Based of the sophomore's highlights from 2022 it looks like he has a bright future ahead of him. Multiple snaps show Gavin's instincts for the LB position. He quickly diagnoses run plays from the movement of the OL and mirroring the back. His quick processing gives him an extra step making it hard for the OL to get an angle on him. All Burt has to do from there is navigate through the trenches on his way to the ball carrier. Gavin also had a few plays that showed off his awareness. He did a great job of staying home and sniffing out a screen on one snap. He did a great job of fighting through blocks to end that play. The 6'3u0022 280 lbs OL is a force in the running game. His overall strength jumps off the tape and stands out from the crowd as he tosses LB/DBs to the ground and drives DL off the ball and into level two opening up huge running lanes. Michael's finish of plays shows off that nasty, aggressive mentality you need on the OL. I also really like his hand usage. His punches are well aimed, and the force behind them stop defenders in their tracks, if they are big enough, or send them to the dirt. Mclaughlin also possesses effective range. He can pull and lead plays, and get to the second level to land blocks. Gus is a 6'2u0022 240 lbs junior that has next level traits in the defensive trenches. The blend of quickness and power that Dammann brings to the field instantly grabbed my attention. He has a really effective first step that eats up cushion and allows him to get the leverage advantage on OL. He then can instantly use that leverage to drive the OL into the backfield, and he does a good job of using his hands to create separation and disengage. Gus has an intriguing blend of stoutness and quickness, and once he gets in the backfield he has the range to chase down and create havoc all over the backfield.
