We all know it’s early in the season to be talking about who is in contention for all conference football awards but here is a look at some of our top returning candidates in the Foothills Division in the 5A SIC:
Player of the Year:
Martinez is the top returning signal caller in the 5A SIC Foothills division. The junior had a monster season for the state runner up Meridian last year. Using his exceptional ability to throw the long ball with timing and accuracy Martinez was the unquestioned leader of the Warriors squad. He has a compact frame that allows him to take all the knocks from opposing defenders and still get up to go with his high competitiveness. He quick release allows the football to be out on time and he even has the ability to really hurt you with his legs. Martinez has shown his escape ability multiple times and always finds a way to make a free runner miss. With a new offensive coordinator this season only time will tell what this superstars stats will look like moving forward. He is primed for a monster junior season and is right at the top of the list for player of the year honors.
Reese is an explosive athlete with the ability to turn a short gain into a long one on any play. His compact frame allows him to transfer that power from his lower body into every defender that tries to take him down one on one. He has game breaking ability with exceptional straight line speed and enough wiggle in his game to make defenders miss in space. Reese always seems to fall forward never going down for negative yards and what we like most about his game is his elite field vision. He is able to see blocks before the are going to happen and understands blocking angles. He is able to help his offensive line by setting up his blockers and then uses patience in order to explode through running lanes for huge gains. The junior is primed for a monster season and will be someone the Rocky Mountain leans on heavily as they move into the 2023 football season.
Highlights
Byington is a workhorse plain and simple, he does not ever seem to get tired during a game. His bruising style of play is intimidating for opposing defenses as he constantly make defenders feel his presence. He is not afraid of contact and at time it looks like he seeks it out just to set the tone of the game. His ability to find creases in the smallest running lanes is what separates him from many of his peers but what might be his best ability is in how he creates lanes if nothing is there. He also is a weapon in the passing game which cant be said about all running backs in the state of Idaho. Byington is able to use his natural pass catching ability to really stress opposing defenses and make teams pay. Watch out for this well known football player as he moves into his senior season the sky’s the limit and is right at the top of our player of the year board.
