There were goal line stands and interceptions on defense, a run game on display and an emerging deep threat on offense you’ll want to keep your eye on:
Here are our notes from the session:
Flying Around Defensively
- Remember the name J’Zavien Currence J’Zavien Currence 6'2" | 190 lbs | ATH South Pointe | 2026 State SC (pictured above). He’s a rising sophomore who is already getting interest from major Power 5 schools. He just received an offer from Boston College recently and has a busy summer camp schedule planned. As for Thursday’s spring game, he nearly had an INT on a designed rollout in the third quarter and was active in run support.
- RJ Buford came up with an interception off of a tip in the first quarter.
- Jordan McFadden jumped a route perfectly over the middle to make an interception in the opening minutes of the second quarter. Kyle Robinson‘s reaction time was quick to prevent a completion as well.
- Chris Dixon Chris Dixon 6'2" | 260 lbs | DL South Pointe | 2024 State SC was a name we heard often – he’s tough to block like we saw at the Palmetto Combine Series last month and he did a nice job of plugging the holes in the run game.
- Two goal line stands were made in the 4th quarter: Bryson Ginn came up with a sack to deny the Red team and Currence came up with a pass breakup.
Rising Stars Offensively
- Jordan Curbeam will be someone you’ll want to keep your eye as we head into the fall. He had a touchdown grab in the first quarter where he was able to adjust well to make the grab. He came back later and made the same catch on a deep vertical route.
- Malachi Marshall Malachi Marshall 6'2" | 190 lbs | QB South Pointe | 2024 State SC got the ball out quickly throughout the afternoon, like on a play action pass to Carmen Finch on play action in the first quarter.
- S.J. Young also hauled in a touchdown grab with a defender in his face near the right corner.
- The Stallions have a plethora of backs who can carry the load and should take the pressure off Malachi Marshall Malachi Marshall 6'2" | 190 lbs | QB South Pointe | 2024 State SC this fall. Zyquavious Pickett and Jalil Jackson were tough running in between the tackles. Jackson runs with a purpose and gets to the outside quickly.
- Nyshay Ross made an impressive catch in traffic from quarterback Ross Switzer in the third quarter on a route that was designed to go over the middle.
Reaction And Looking Ahead
“We’re working every day in the weight room, getting faster.” Currence said. The sophomore wants to work on his speed heading into the summer and is looking forward to a busy camp circuit where he plans to visit Alabama, Virginia Tech along with numerous others.
South Pointe coach Bobby Collins on Jordan Curbeam: “(He’s) doing what we always thought he can do, made some big time plays so I’m excited with what I see.”
Collins told his team after the scrimmage that they are further ahead than where they were last year. But when we asked him about it, he said it didn’t have anything to do with the play on the field.
“Weight room. We lost some phenomenal players last year so it’s hard to replace a DK (Demari Kendrick), DJ Barksdale. I think we got some guys that are new to the system and we just gotta get them caught up but we’re exactly where I want us to be at in May. We’ve got June and July. Nobody doesn’t remember you in Rock Hill unless you’re playing in December.”
South Pointe opens the 2023 season on the road on August 18 against Spartanburg.
