In the lead-up to the 2023 season, I will be doing a position preview feature. This feature will jump around by class and district while highlighting different position groups in that district.

The first district we have up is A-1 which features the Columbus Discoverers, Lincoln East Spartans, Lincoln Links, Lincoln North Star Gators, and the Millard South Patriots. In this article, we will look at each team's QB situation as they head into the summer.

Columbus

The Discoverers will be going into year 2 with incoming senior [player_tooltip player_id='250284' first='Braylon' last='Vancura'] at QB. Braylon and the Discoverers had a rough go at it offensively as they battled injuries and inexperience at several positions. Braylon wasn't asked to throw much in the run-heavy offense, finishing with only 46 attempts for 241 passing yards and two passing touchdowns. Braylon does a great job moving through his reads with an overlooked ability to extend plays with his legs. He's very mobile in the pocket. The tape and Braylon's performances at some of our showcases have shown us that he has what it takes to lead Columbus; it's just a matter of putting it all together.

[player_tooltip player_id='250284' first='Braylon' last='Vancura'] | 2024 | Columbus | 6'1" 160 lbs

Hudl | Twitter

Lincoln East

The Spartans are a wildcard team in Class A this season. Despite losing a great senior class, they bring back a lot of talented players with tons of potential. Among them is QB [player_tooltip player_id='545269' first='Jeter' last='Worthley'], fresh off helping LE win a baseball championship, who will be back for year two under center. Worthley was thrown to the wolves early last season and took off with it. Although the Spartans experienced some growing pains, Jeter gave us a lot to look forward to in the next two seasons. He passed for 1,704 yards on 61% completion with 14 passing touchdowns and also added 343 yards and six touchdowns on the ground. He's a smart, efficient QB who makes great ball decisions. He has a strong arm that can push the ball deep and throw with zip on shorter passes.

[player_tooltip player_id='545269' first='Jeter' last='Worthley'] | 2025 | Lincoln East | 6'0" 175 lbs

Hudl | Twitter

Lincoln High

One of the top priorities for the Links this offseason will be to establish who their signal-caller is going to be. Last season they played with Sioux Falls signee [player_tooltip player_id='226993' first='Adonis' last='Hutchinson'] at QB and RB/ATH [player_tooltip player_id='226996' first='Julian' last='Babahanov'] when Adonis was injured. I'm not entirely sure how far their depth went after that or which names to look out for out of the transfer pool/JV team. I look forward to seeing which hungry Links emerge and take over the QB1 job.

Lincoln North Star

The Gators saw a couple of QBs split the starting spot last season, with incoming junior [player_tooltip player_id='245876' first='Beaudree' last='Ball'] emerging as the likely starter for next season. Ball had a solid sophomore season as he, and the young Gators offense, continued to grow as a player. He finished the season with 699 passing yards and three passing touchdowns in seven games played. He attended a recent PRZ showcase and looked much more poised and with improved mechanics. Ball has the arm strength to make throws to all levels of the field and has a certain toughness about him that keeps him fighting in games.

[player_tooltip player_id='245876' first='Beaudree' last='Ball'] | 2025 | North Star | 6'0" 190 lbs

Hudl | Twitter

Millard South

The Patriots had quite the journey at quarterback last season. When regular starter [player_tooltip player_id='226976' first='Camden' last='Kozeal'] went to play for US baseball overseas, Millard South saw [player_tooltip player_id='226974' first='Brock' last='Murtaugh'], [player_tooltip player_id='476963' first='Jett' last='Thomalla'], and [player_tooltip player_id='250264' first='Kaleb' last='Panowicz'] all get their crack at the QB1 role. This season should be a little less tumultuous as incoming sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='476963' first='Jett' last='Thomalla'] looks like the favorite to win the job. Jett is a poised QB that can stand tall in the pocket while analyzing the defense. He makes great reads and processes the game at a high level. He has been tearing it up recently on the 7v7 circuit. Senior [player_tooltip player_id='250264' first='Kaleb' last='Panowicz'] is a name to watch out for as well. However, he has looked very impressive at safety and receiver, so we could see him more in those positions.

[player_tooltip player_id='476963' first='Jett' last='Thomalla'] | 2026 | Millard South | 6'4" 180 lbs

Hudl | Twitter

[player_tooltip player_id='250264' first='Kaleb' last='Panowicz'] | 2024 | Millard South | 6'0" 200 lbs

Hudl | Twitter

Make sure to follow @PrepRedzoneNE on Twitter and Instagram to stay up to date with all your Nebraska prep recruiting news.
