About 80 total prospects, most of them juniors, showed up in Canyon for the three-hour event.
“It was a basic introduction to our football program,” Lynn told Prep Redzone Texas. “I gave a general introduction, introduced our staff and talked about the expectations for our program. We had a good turnout. Lot of kids from the Panhandle. It’s the start of the recruiting process.”
Prospects toured the WTAM locker rooms, training room, weight room and the football facility, and met with academic counselors who told them about the requirements for admission into the school and maintaining eligibility to play football.
Panhandle schools such as West Plains and Lubbock Monterey had solid turnouts, along with prospects from smaller schools (four players from 3A Bushland were there), Lynn said.
“I had been away long enough where many of the kids weren’t even in high school the last time I was around the Panhandle,” Lynn said. “So, it was brand new. Junior Day is a great opportunity to see the kids and see their personalities.”
Next step? The Buffaloes will conduct 10 prospect camps throughout Texas beginning in late May:
May 20 – Canyon (WTAM Stadium)
June 8 – Houston (North Shore High School)
June 9 – Austin (Georgetown High School)
June 9 – San Antonio (Warren High School)
June 10 – Dallas (DeSoto High School)
June 14 – East Texas (Longview High School)
June 15 – Carrollton (Prince of Price Christian School)
June 15 – Crandall (Crandall High School)
June 16 – Wolfforth/Lubbock (Frenship High School)
July 30 – Canyon (WTAM Stadium)
“We’re trying to hit every area of Texas,” Lynn said. “We want to give every young man an opportunity to come to our camps and show their skills so we can get them on our radar.”
WTAM coaches will hit the road next week for spring evaluation.
