JD is one of the most improved players at the 419 football club this off-season. His dedication to getting faster and stronger is paying off with early wins during this outdoor track season. JD should be the feature back for the Little Giants this fall, but he also has the skill to make plays from the slot. His toughness and improved coverage skills will complement his teammates in the secondary. Moncrief will be a crucial piece on the defense in 2023. Expect to see an explosive athlete who can make plays in space this fall.
Brandon Cowan – Toledo Woodward – OL – 2024
Cowan is one of the top returning offensive linemen for the Polar Bears in 2023. There are few films on this prospect, but his coaches believe he could have a big season this fall. Brandon is 6’2 and weighs 275 and is tough as nails. His overall skill level needs improvement, but his heart and toughness are on track to become an impact player in the City League.
Preston Fryzel – Toledo Central Catholic – WR – 2026
The Central Catholic WR core will be resounding with new talent, and Preston will be a big-time possession WR in Greg Dempsey’s offense. Fryzel is a smooth and long receiver with the freakish athletic ability to make you look twice. Another prospect that could be quickly overlooked due to lack of film, but once you see him run routes in person, he can play with the best in the area. The breakout season is loading for this talented prospect; remember the name.
Billy Wertz – Toledo Start – QB – 2024
The Start Spartans returning QB, Billy Wertz, is improving his all-around game this offseason. Wertz and the Spartans were denied a City League championship at the fate of the Scott Bulldogs. In 2023 the stakes are higher as the Lima Spartans will join the league and add to the depth of competition for the crown. Billy throws the ball with some severe zip and knows how to make plays with his feet when he gets in trouble. He is focused on his accuracy and leadership as new head coach Nate James implements a unique style of offense that will fit Billy’s profile. Keep your eyes on Wertz this football season.
Anthony Pedro – Toledo St. Francis De Sales – ATH – 2026
Pedro showed up on the radar for me at the 419 Football Club, and what was most impressive about him was that he was a sponge. Very fluid feet and good hips by nature, with the gift to play both sides of the football. On the defensive side, you can see he has the most upside as he got better every single rep. Some kids shy away from competition, but Anthony embraced it and showed flashes of an all-league player down the road. We are looking forward to seeing him in the future.
