Today I was lucky enough to sit down with upcoming star Da’mon Thomas Da’mon Thomas 5'11" | 170 lbs | DB Michigan City | 2026 State IN . Thomas is someone who has turned heads and had people interested for a few years already. He was one of the most highlighted Indiana recruits on Prep Redzone Next over the past few years, and for good reason. He’s a phenomenal athlete, has great range, who checks a ton of boxes, and then backed all of that hype up this past fall. He’s a well-built athlete who is seemingly always the best athlete on the field. He’s explosive, tough, physical, and simply stands out above the rest.
With Thomas, I really feel like his future is wide open on the backend. He’s got elite cover skills. He’s not only able to keep receivers in phase, but has fairly smooth and natural footwork. Not perfect, but he’s not a baby deer running around out there. He’s under control, calm, and collected. Combined with his physical play style, he’s really able to erase the pass-catchers he’s come across. If he wanted to be moved to Safety, either side, I don’t see an issue. He can tackle, he’s a great athlete, and can make up lost ground.
Interview Portion
Question: “What does football mean to you, and what are some of your goals in football?”
Da’mon: “Everything started with football for me. I was just able to be around my brother, go to his practices, and see him grow. I’ve always been around football and don’t know how I could have the relationships or things I do without it. Relationships and seeing how team chemistry is built showed me so much.”
On his goals in football: “Right now my focus is just getting to college. That’s my main goal and to get there I don’t want to get caught thinking too far ahead.”
Question: “What is 1 thing you’re looking to improve on this fall?”
Da’mon: “Making more impactful plays. I feel like I’m in the right spot and can deflect balls, but would like to bring the ball in and create more turnovers.”
Question: “You mentioned that you played with the same group of guys for almost 10 years. Did it create any friction between you and them when you were starting Varsity and they didn’t?”
Da’mon: “No, not at all. More than anything, it made us closer. I wasn’t able to play with them so I had to watch the freshman games and not going to lie, it was hard at times. I wanted to be out there with them more than anything. Then, I was asking the older guys all the questions I could picking their brains. Yeah, they gave me some beef jokingly, but I’m able to joke right back. Being able to ask older guys questions and then have the answer for myself or my friends in freshman games was big for us all.”
Question: “What’s your favorite food? Anything’s available, what’s you’re go to?”
Da’mon: “Burgers. Not only are they good, but nobody passes on a grilled burger so it’s the perfect reason to get together with the squad.”
Question: “What’s your favorite part about being a DB? Nobody notices you until you make a mistake, why DB?”
Da’mon: “It’s just what I do. I don’t worry about the next play or the last play. I only control the current play and I’ve learned to have a short memory on the field.” I’m not chatty on the field. I don’t feel the need to be chatty or talk. I like to make them frustrated by shutting them down. Makes them more mad then talking.”
During our conversation, we both had the NFL Draft on as Day 2 was getting ready to start. Right at the end of our talk, the pick was made and it was a DB to the Steelers. I said to him, “Why can’t that be you?” His response: “I have to get to college first. That’s my main focus first.” Truthfully, I really appreciated that answer. Not only was it his answer from earlier, but it was the same mindset that he had throughout the conversation. He’s not thinking too far ahead, yet understands what needs to be done to get there. He comes across as humble, he’s hardworking, and an easy conversation. You can see really quickly why he’s gaining interest as a freshman, and why his future is so bright moving forward.
