All of these young men are set to have big Varsity roles this upcoming fall and could really help Speedway make a deep push later in the season.
Jazz Coleman Jazz Coleman 5'11" | 195 lbs | RB Speedway | 2026 State IN – Speedway – ATH – 5’11” 185lbs
Coleman is a phenomenal athlete who is good just about anywhere you can find a spot for him on the field. At RB, in the Slot, LB, in the backend, and picking up slack elsewhere is what he’s capable of. So, no limitations with what he’s able to do. Offensively with the ball in his hands, he feels like a young foal. Long strides, high strides, and a bit erratic, but good luck bringing him down. He’s a well-built young player who you can tell spends time not just in the weight room, but working on flexibility and not getting stiff. His frame, especially for his age, is ahead of schedule. Defensively, he’s got the same level of promise. Elite range and can come up and hit. He’s got the speed to play Safety, yet has the physicality to play LB. Keep him in the box or let him roam the backend, it doesn’t seem like you can go wrong. As a Freshman, he started every game and was asked to do more and more each week. His 300 rushing yards and 2 TDs set the tone for what should be a big breakout year on offense for him. His defensive line of 57 tackles, 6 TFLs, and 2 sacks was much more exciting, but solely because he had more opportunity. I feel like Coleman is an obvious guy to not only take another step this fall, but is a guy who is going to be mentioned with the elites of this class on the regular.

Connor Moreland Connor Moreland 6'0" | 190 lbs | QB Speedway | 2026 State IN – Speedway – QB – 6’0″ 190lbs
Moreland is the guy that the schools who know about him already were hoping I wouldn’t find and highlight, because they wanted to snag as their future superstar QB before anyone noticed. Well, I’ve got some bad news for those guys and some good news of people who like good football. Moreland is going to be a that dude for Speedway. Last year, he got some Varsity work and not just looked good, but felt ahead of the game for guys his age group. While he completed just under 60% of his passes, it wasn’t the stats that standout. For Moreland, it’s the way he plays the game. He seems to process very quickly. Very, very quickly and is ahead of the curb on a lot of things defenses throw his way. His footwork and base, is fairly decent for being just a Freshman. There are moments of hesitation, but he’s human so what do you expect? When he’s playing loose and free, he carves up defenses. He’s able to throw with anticipation and put some heat behind the throws. Later in the season as he got more comfortable, he was taking check-downs and keeping drives alive with his legs. He’s even willing to go 20-yards downfield to lower a shoulder to block. While not something you want your QB doing very often, to see that level of competitiveness is a great thing. Moreland is set to be the full-time starter this year and is going to be one of the hottest names in Indiana in 12 months time.

Kelvin Bass Kelvin Bass 5'8" | 165 lbs | ATH Speedway | 2026 State IN – Speedway – WR/DB – 5’7″ 150lbs
Bass is a really quick player who is great in short spaces as well as turning and opening up and running. They trusted him out wide on an island as a Freshman, and for good reason. He’s got the athletic ability to hang with anyone and is just a really good natural fluid athlete. He doesn’t have issues changing directions, sticking his foot in the ground, or any of those little things. He’s got great closing speed and isn’t afraid to take hit shot at the ball if he can. He’s got decent ball skills as well so he’s able to make some of those over the shoulder interceptions as well. While I do think there are times he can be a bit too handsy with his WR, it’s minor and he’s still a young recruit with plenty of time to get more fundamentals down so that’s not needed. He pretty much played a full Varsity workload and was up to the task all season long. He put up a fairly respectable 46 tackles and 2 interceptions while playing strictly CB. Whether he was in the slot or out wide, it didn’t quite matter. Bass is going to be a very reliable DB for Speedway for years to come with the ability to add some contribution to offense as well.

Avery Mitchell Avery Mitchell 5'7" | 145 lbs | ATH Ben Davis | 2026 State IN – Speedway – WR/DB – 5’6″ 135lbs
Mitchell was the unsung hero of Speedway’s season last year in many ways. A good player, in 3 phases of the game, and simply willing to do whatever is needed in that moment. All in his Freshman campaign at the Varsity level he started at DB, returned kicks, rushed the ball, and caught passes. If you add his interceptions, passes deflected, and interceptions, Mitchell quite literally touched the ball in every single way possible outside of throwing a pass. He’s a fantastic athlete who knows his strengths. The best part, even being a smaller player, he’s tough to bring down with the ball in his hands. On the season, Mitchell put up a rushing TD, 2 receiving TDs, 43 total tackles while having 1 sack, forcing a fumble, and a pick 6. I’m not quite sure what else you can ask a player to do, but it’s clear that he is going to be very important and a big part of the future plan for them. Mitchell is the definition of a versatile recruit with an upside worth every second of your time.

Ja’Ronn Smith Ja’Ronn Smith 5'10" | 190 lbs | ATH Speedway | 2026 State IN – Speedway – RB/WR – 5’10” 190lbs
Smith is someone I hit just 2 months ago, but added onto this piece because he’s absolutely part of that core and I don’t want skip him here just because I hit him then. The following is my evaluation of Smith from February, but I’ll add that I didn’t talk about his defensive background on that piece, but should have. He was a rotational DB for them last year at the Varsity level and should have a bigger role on defense next year. Smith is a developing back who is creative with the ball in his hands. North, South, East, & West with him. Anything he can do to create positive yardage is what he’ll do. He’s got a tendency to try bouncing it outside and hesitates at the line, but that’s just a young back who needs to trust his feet and what he sees. He’s a decent athlete and has a good top-end speed. He’s got soft hands and can catch it out of the backfield and be a threat there as well. He’s a back who isn’t easy to bring down and makes it incredibly tough on defenders. He’ll fight tooth and nail for every inch on the field. He does play receiver at times and there are moments where he feels more free out running routes catching balls downfield. I think it’s a promising sign for a young man like that to do both and be willing to go back and forth. I like Smith and think he could really develop into a sneaky good recruit down the road.
