“Offensively, we can be a juggernaut,” he said. “Defense will be the primary concern this spring, getting back to where we were two years ago.”
Even with having to move versatile running back Will Young Will Young 5'10" | 165 lbs | ATH Brookland-Cayce | 2024 State SC to quarterback, Charpia believes his run-dominant offense will continue to enjoy success.
The primary reason is returning the most size at offensive and defensive line he’s coached during his tenure. This group was primarily responsible for opening holes for 1,000-plus rusher Naahzeikial Mays Naahzeikial Mays 5'9" | 175 lbs | RB Brookland-Cayce | 2023 State SC and De’Shaun Washington and enabling the offense to average close to 300 yards a contest.
Topping the scales for the Bearcats is senior Jacory Jones (6-foot-5, 340 pounds) who controls the left side and Division 1 prospect Kamden Sox Kamden Sox 6'4" | 290 lbs | OL Brookland-Cayce | 2024 State SC (6-foot-4, 286 lb.) who can play guard and tackle on either side of the line.
Teamming up with Jones and Sox on both sides of the football are rising juniors O’Bryan Leaphart (6-fooot-2, 275 lbs.) and Antohn Ford (6-foot-3, 285 lbs.).
At the skilled positions, middle linebacker Jamarion Brown is the center of the defense, according to Charpia, in terms of making plays and leadership. In the secondary, safety Jvonn Edwards and Chris Boston have the speed and desire to make tackles to hold their own.
Brookland-Cayce and Gilbert have battled back and forth for the Region 5-3A title the past five seasons. During that span, Charpia said the school has developed a strong culture which has extended through the middle school ranks.
Charpia will be wearing two head coaching hats for the next couple of months. He’s also the head coach of the Region 5-3A champion baseball team which opens play Monday at home. As a result, the Bearcats are tentatively scheduled to start spring practice May 9.
