2024 Rankings Update: Small School Standouts

Here at Prep Redzone South Carolina, we keep our eyes on prospects from all over the 2024 cycle, and it's not just the 4A, 5A and 3A schools.    We're taking a look at talent from the 2A, 1A and SCISA level who were either already in the rankings or recently added. A Lowcountry defensive lineman & speedster, a two-way player from the Pee Dee who can make an impact and a dual threat quarterback from the Midlands are some of the highlights.   [player_tooltip player_id='91353' first='Jamarious' last='Lockett'], ATH, Gray Collegiate   The first few clips of Lockett's film feature his blocking at his wide receiver position where he plays in the slot. And it's easy to see why – he is aggressive at the point of attack and he can get his hands on defensive backs. When he's not catching the ball, he is dynamic. He can run bubble screens and turn those into 10+ yard completions. We were impressed with his ability to run routes to the sideline and make contested catches.    [player_tooltip player_id='139300' first='Ben' last='Britton'], DL, Oceanside Collegiate   Britton is an enforcer on the defensive line. He is almost impossible to block at the point of attack and he can defeat blocks quickly. When he's up against the run, he can clog up running lanes and not allow the back to get out of the backfield most snaps. He has great size and speed at the position. Notice we said speed. That's because he can chase down a running back on passes out of the backfield.    [player_tooltip player_id='239076' first='Zion' last='Dobson'], ATH, Wade Hampton   Dobson is a speedster at the running back position. Once he finds some open room, it could be a house call. He runs north and south and explodes. He can catch the ball out of the backfield and gets up field quickly to earn extra yardage. His play during the 2022 season earned him All-State and All-Region honors. He ran for 200 carries, 1065 yards and 15 touchdowns.    [player_tooltip player_id='139306' first='Christian' last='Echols'], OL, Silver Bluff   Echols has good movement at the left tackle position. He can shield off opposing defensive linemen, not allowing them to get any penetration into the backfield. He has good knee bend and he can block downfield bringing the aggressiveness to the linemen.    [player_tooltip player_id='448981' first='Kartrell' last='Townsend'], ATH, Latta   Townsend is a two-way player who can make an impact. We'll start on defense as you'll see him line up at safety. His strength is that he can come up and make plays in run support. He can recognize plays quickly to where he doesn't hesitate at his safety position. At the quarterback position, the offensive scheme we saw on film is designed for him to run the zone read and he is a difference maker every time he keeps it.    [player_tooltip player_id='267466' first='Dashun' last='Reeder'], RB, Christ Church   Reeder (pictured above) is one of the more impressive running backs that we've seen on film. Speed, power and vision are all clear qualities of his game when you turn on the film. He knows what to do when he gets the ball in his hands and he has great explosion and toughness – defenders had better tackle him when they get a shot at him. Reeder finished the 2022 season with 2,212 yards and 43 touchdowns as his team finished with a state championship. He also walked away with <a href="https://prepredzone.com/2023/04/palmetto-combine-west-mvp-award-winners-from-senior-session/">MVP honors at the Palmetto Combine West</a> at Westside High School two weeks ago.    [player_tooltip player_id='208348' first='Tykeem' last='Martin'], WR, Ridge Spring-Monetta   Martin is another impressive slot receiver who has impressive speed and can run a variety of different routes. Whether it's a deep vertical route for a touchdown or a corner route, he's a threat to take the top off the defense at any time.    [player_tooltip player_id='710430' first='Ahmir' last='Smith'], ATH, Calhoun County   Smith can line up and put his speed and strength on display at the running back position. He doesn't waste time dancing in space, he just makes good north and south progress, He has good vision as well.    [player_tooltip player_id='589049' first='Duncan' last='Skehan'], QB, Cardinal Newman   Skehan's ability to keep plays alive while scrambling in the pocket is what stood out to us immediately when we turned on his film. He keeps his eyes downfield and finds open receivers. The balls that he throws are right on the money. He can also make the deep throws to the sideline and throw to where only his receiver can get it. He stands at 6'2, 205 pounds and he finished the 2022 season with 2302 pass yards, 21 passing touchdowns with a completion percentage at 61%. In the run game, he finished with 208 rush yards with 5 touchdowns.     [player_tooltip player_id='317140' first='Trey' last='Thompson'], RB, [player_tooltip player_id='758179' first='Andrew' last='Jackson']   Thompson has the perfect combo of speed and power at the position. He has great vision to wait on the hole to open up and then he explodes to make quick north and south progress. And we feel sorry for defenders that are in his way, because he will simply run you over as we saw multiple times on film. He finished the 2022 season with 2,509 yards rushing and 38 touchdowns on 340 carries.
