Across the 3A division, five quarterbacks have emerged as the leading contenders to lead their teams to victory. From flashy runners to strong-armed passers, each of these young athletes brings a unique skill set to the table. As fans eagerly anticipate the start of the season, let’s take a closer look at the top five quarterbacks set to take the field this fall in Wichita 3A.
Ferralez has a unique combination of qualities that make him a versatile and dynamic player on the field. He demonstrates excellent footwork in the pocket, showing great patience and composure under pressure. He has decent arm strength and can deliver accurate passes with relative ease. Additionally, he possesses impressive scrambling ability, willing to put his body on the line to make plays happen with a deadly dead leg cut. However, he has a tendency to stare down his receivers on his throws, making it easier for defenders to anticipate his movements and disrupt his passes. Despite this weakness, his agility and willingness to take risks make him a valuable asset to any team in need of a versatile and dynamic quarterback.
Highlights
Harvey is a standout player with impressive physical attributes and a natural talent for the game. His great size and powerful arm make him a force to be reckoned with on the field, able to launch 40 yard deep passes with impressive accuracy. He also demonstrates good change of direction when running and decent speed, allowing him to evade defenders and pick up yards on the ground. Additionally, he offers good touch on his throws when on the move, showing a strong understanding of the game and the ability to make split-second decisions. However, he does have an awkward arm slot and tends to keep the ball low when throwing, which could lead to interceptions or batted balls. Despite these minor weaknesses, Zimmerman’s natural talent and impressive physical attributes make him a valuable asset to any team in need of a powerful and versatile quarterback.
Burdick is an intriguing player with a unique set of skills that could be valuable for Cheney. He has fancy footwork in the pocket, able to evade defenders and create space to make plays happen. However, he has an above average arm, and is able to deliver deep passes and make pinpoint throws under pressure. He also has an ability to pick up first downs with his feet, showing good quickness when scrambling out of the pocket. Additionally, he demonstrates an awkward throwing motion similar to Tim Tebow’s, which could make it harder for him to deliver accurate passes consistently. Nonetheless, his quickness and agility make him a valuable asset in certain situations, particularly when rolling right and looking to pass down the sideline. While he doesn’t have tons of film to showcase his abilities, he has the potential to be a dynamic and versatile quarterback in the right system. Burdick will look to take the reins from graduate Caden Sowers and command this Cardinal offense.
Blake McCuan
Blake McCuan
McCuan shows great potential despite only having junior varsity film to showcase his abilities. He is already demonstrating an impressive ability to move and dance with defensive linemen while still keeping his eyes downfield, allowing him to find his targets even when under pressure. While he has some rough mechanics, these are not uncommon for a player at his level, particularly given his youth and inexperience. His arm is not particularly strong, and he has a tendency to leave the ball hanging in the air, which could result in interceptions at the varsity level. Additionally, he has a tendency to stare down his receivers until the very end, making it easier for defenders to anticipate his throws. Finally, he struggles with setting his feet when throwing on the run, which could limit his effectiveness on broken plays or when scrambling outside of the pocket. Despite these weaknesses, he shows great potential as a quarterback, particularly given his ability to navigate the pocket and find open receivers. With continued development and coaching, he can navigate this offense with his first year head coach and do amazing things.
Isaac Vanderburg
Isaac Vanderburg
Teams like Collegiate that really only trotted out seniors at QB are difficult to gauge who will command the offense next year, but I see Isaac Vanderburg as their guy. Isaac has alright downhill speed, which can be an asset when scrambling and picking up first downs with his legs. However, he has yet to demonstrate any significant lateral quickness, which could limit his ability to evade defenders and extend plays. Additionally, he has a tendency to have a wide base when throwing deep balls, which could limit his accuracy and power. Unfortunately, there is very little film available to assess his performance, with no footage from his freshman year and limited footage from junior high. As a sophomore, he is still very young and has a lot of room to grow and develop. With coaching and practice, he may be able to improve his lateral agility and refine his throwing mechanics, which could make him a valuable asset to his team in the future. However, without more evidence of his performance, it is difficult to assess his full potential as a quarterback.
