Through the first few classifications of small-school honorees, here were eight first- or second-team all-state hoops standouts who were also big-time playmakers for their schools on the football field in the fall.
Trey’Dez Green Trey’Dez Green 6'7" | 225 lbs | ATH Zachary | 2024 State LA — 6-7, 210 ATH — East Feliciana (2024)
A long list of talented young Louisiana athletes play multiple sports each school year, but the Tigers’ star is in rarified air in terms of his elite level as a prospect in both sports. Green averaged 24 points, 13 rebounds, four assists and three blocked shots this season en route to District 6-2A MVP and Class 2A First-Team honors, a No. 1 playoff seed and East Feliciana’s first state tournament berth.
De’Vion Lavergne — 6-3 WR — North Central (2023)
The only player on this list to earn his classification’s Outstanding Player honors, Lavergne drew the superlative honors in Class 1A after helping lead the Hurricanes to their second straight title and fourth in the past five years. The long, physical guard, the District 6-1A MVP, averaged 26.9 points, 9.2 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 2.7 steals and 1.3 blocks per game.
Jay’Shaun Johnson Jay’Shaun Johnson 5'11" | 165 lbs | ATH Franklin | 2024 State LA — 5-11, 165 ATH — Franklin (2024)
The Hornets’ speedster started garnering some strong Division-I recruitment with his standout football season and followed up his impressive fall with an all-state winter on the basketball court that helped lead his school on an underdog run to the Division-IV nonselect state title game. Johnson earned District 8-2A MVP and Class 2A First-Team honors for his performance, including averages of 17 points, three assists, four steals and 2.3 rebounds per game.
Demond Davis — 6-4, 230 DL/TE — Patterson (2024)
The big man was a handful for opponents throughout his Lumberjacks’ memorable Division-III non-select run to the semifinals where they took eventual champion Port Allen to double overtime. Davis averted 15 points, 12 rebounds, five assists and one blocked shot per game as Patterson made its first state tournament appearance since 2009.
Damondrick Blackburn Damondrick Blackburn 6'0" | 215 lbs | RB Central Catholic | 2023 State LA — 6-0, 215 RB — Central Catholic (2023)
The senior standout earned football all-state honors with a record-setting fall of 2,012 yards and 36 touchdowns rushing and 41 total touchdowns. And Blackburn added Class 1A all-state second-team honors to his decorated final high school year this past week on the heels of his 17.9-point, 10.4-rebound, 3.6-steal efforts on the court as the District 7-1A MVP that helped lead his team to the Division IV select quarterfinals.
Bralyn Mayfield — 6-4, 190 QB/ATH — Lincoln Prep (2023)
The Lincoln Prep quarterback passed for more than 1,100 yards and 11 touchdowns in the fall and provided much of his basketball team’s size and scoring punch this winter with 18.3 points and 11.2 rebounds per game en route to the Division-IV select state title game. Mayfield was the District 2-1A MVP in the regular season, but upped his numbers to a 22-point average in the playoffs and 32 points in the championship game against champion Northwood (Lena) to cap a Class 1A first-team all-state campaign.
Keithan Hamilton — 5-9, 175 ATH — Winnfield (2023)
The versatile athlete was among his Tigers’ top players on the football field as a running back, receiver, defensive back and returner and then on the basketball court with a District 3-2A MVP performance to help lead Winnfield to the first state championship game in school history. Hamilton averaged 16 points and five rebounds per game to earn a Class 2A all-state second-team nod.
Kendrell Perry — 6-1, 190 DB/ATH — St. Thomas Aquinas (2023)
The hard-hitting safety and versatile playmaker on offense has been an all-district football standout during his high school career and, with a 20.1-point senior campaign, added District 7-2A MVP and Class 2A all-state second-team honors to his trophy case this winter and spring.
