The Sooner State Shootout is in the books and it was a fantastic weekend of football in Broken Arrow! 65 teams from 8 different states came and four would walk away with championships in their respective divisions. In this post, I’m going to take a look at the top quarterbacks from the 14U division throughout the weekend. Keep it locked in to Prep Redzone for more breakdowns on the top 14U players as well as the other divisions throughout the tournament.
Canon Bronson Canon Bronson 6'1" | 185 lbs | QB Deer Creek | 2027 OK – 2027 – Northwest Elite
Northwest Elite’s 14U squad came up just shy of winning the championship as they fell to Sooner 7 in the title game on Sunday afternoon. However, they had a great tournament with a 6-1 record and 2027 quarterback Canon Bronson Canon Bronson 6'1" | 185 lbs | QB Deer Creek | 2027 OK from Edmond had a really strong showing throughout the tournament. Bronson didn’t get all the reps at the quarterback position for them throughout the weekend, but it felt like every time I watched them, he was at the quarterback spot and making plays with his arm. The thing that really stood out to me was his ability to push the ball down field. He already has pretty decent size and the ball was jumping out of his hands. He put it on a rope several times during the tournament while also showing nice touch to get it over defender’s hands.
Landen Gonzalez – 2028 – Stampede
With just a few practices under their belt, Stampede out of the Tulsa area had a good showing throughout the weekend and they were led by their quarterback Landen Gonzalez, who is a 2028 quarterback in Sand Springs. Gonzalez had a really good performance throughout the day on Saturday in pool play. It seemed like every time I was watching one of their games, he was in full control of the offense and putting the ball exactly where he wanted to go. His coach also happens to be his dad and with coach’s sons, that type of control is commonplace. Gonzalez performed really well on Saturday and already has some good size and strength to his arm. We’re looking forward to seeing more of him a few years from now when he enters high school.
Maddox Young – 2027 – Sooner 7
Sooner 7 would capture the championship in the 14U division and both quarterbacks were impressive but we could only pick one and we’re giving Maddox Young the slightest of edges. Young had a really good weekend throwing the ball and while I’ve seen plenty of stuff about Young on social media, this was my first time really watching him throw the ball in person. He has a good arm and there’s no doubt that he benefitted from having some legit playmakers to get the ball to throughout the two days in Broken Arrow. One thing that stood out to me was the different arm angles he can fire the ball out of depending on where he’s going with the ball. You just don’t see that very often. He did enough to stand out on both days as a top performer.
Pete Dorsey Pete Dorsey 6'0" | 160 lbs | QB Wellsville | 2027 State KS – 2027 – Kansas Elite
The Kansas Elite program had an up and down weekend but for the 14U team, their quarterback Pete Dorsey Pete Dorsey 6'0" | 160 lbs | QB Wellsville | 2027 State KS got things started off on Sunday with a bang. In one of the first games of the day in bracket play, Dorsey had some clutch plays down the stretch as they beat 918 Elite in the first round to advance to the quarterfinals of the tournament. They would come up short in that round but Dorsey showed great poise down the stretch when Kansas Elite needed that from him. He also had a close win on Saturday against Stampede and fellow 14U quarterback standout Landen Gonzalez. The 2027 quarterback from Wellsville really impressed us with his accuracy throughout the weekend but it was his play in the closest and toughest games that stuck out.
Tyson Pogi Tyson Pogi 5'10" | 145 lbs | QB Mustang | 2027 State OK – 2027 – USOs Gold
If you follow Oklahoma football very closely, you might have already heard of 2027 quarterback Tyson Pogi Tyson Pogi 5'10" | 145 lbs | QB Mustang | 2027 State OK from Mustang. He’s already on the radar as the next potential name at the quarterback position but it’s still obviously very early. So when I had the chance to catch Pogi for a couple games on Sunday during bracket play, my expectations were already pretty high. He met them as he helped his team win a few games and move on in bracket play. I’m looking forward to seeing more of him as he enters high school this fall and I know that the coaches at Mustang are already excited to have him get into the high school. There’s a good reason why Pogi is already on the radar as a quarterback prospect at such a young age and he backed up the hype this weekend.
