The Eagles were knocking on the door of a spot in the SCISA 2A title game last year but fell in heartbreaking fashion to Colleton Prep in the semifinals. They'll lose valuable experience and two-way hustle in Braydon Dineen who starred at both quarterback and middle linebacker, but Nic's son [player_tooltip player_id='268686' first='Dietrich' last='Shuford'] will bring a new wave of energy under center. Shuford's strong dual-threat play at quarterback will be complemented by the Eagles' two-headed monster of [player_tooltip player_id='976400' first='Devonte' last='Green'] and Jaxen Porter. The two backs have a lethal mix of power and agility that should be even tougher to contain with the run game of Shuford in the fold. If the new quarterback can take that next step with his arm next year, Beaufort Academy could stretch the defense in a big way with speedy and dynamic receiver Te'Shaun Heyward.

BA's defense will be anchored by rising sophomore defensive tackle Tres Delaney, who was prominent in stopping the run last year with his alertness and strength up front. Two-way standout and kicker Zeke Gonzalez will look to replicate a strong junior year in 2023. He has plus speed and hands to track down passes on offense and can anticipate plays well in the secondary.

If [player_tooltip player_id='268686' first='Dietrich' last='Shuford'] plays up to the proven abilities that he showed as a Thomas Heyward Rebel and can find added production up front, Beaufort Academy's offense could be a heck of a challenge to slow down in 2023. With a veteran coach who knows how to win at the SCISA level, the Eagles are set up well for a chance at a game in Charleston this November.
