Each one of these young men saw varsity action as freshmen for their respective programs in 2022 and made an impact in doing so. They need to continue to develop physically and progress through their offseason training this spring. With all that being said, I do believe this group is bound to take a big step forward in 2023.
As always, If you have someone you think I need to see, please DM them to me on Twitter at @hsfbscout!
DB: Joseph Gray, 5’11” 175, Whitney Young
The first thing that pops out to you on tape is the physicality and the willingness to come up & make tackles in run support. Gray is slippery against perimeter blocks, has adequate body control, and will lean on receivers to widen their release. He stays over the top in a press bail technique and has the leaping ability to high point on the 50/50 ball.
WR: Dylan Reyes, 5’10” 160, Geneva
A dependable slot receiver with strong hands and great concentration coming out of his breaks. Reyes will find the holes in zone, can adjust to make catches out of awkward body positions, and has tremendous vision after the catch. This is a well-rounded wide receiver prospect who I think should see his production skyrocket in his second year on varsity.
ATH: Dashawn Armstrong, 5’8″ 140, Jacksonville
A scatback with excellent patience and high-end burst. Armstrong has subtle, yet extremely effective shake, and can burst through arm tackle attempts. On defense, he’s smooth working out of a shuffle, has plenty of make-up speed, and will lock onto receivers during the scramble drill.
RB: KyVeon Chestnut, 5’8″ 150, Bloomington
Chestnut has some deception and changes rush speeds to allow blocks to set up in front of him. He’s a smaller back, but he will get lost behind the line of scrimmage and can bounce a run to the perimeter if an edge isn’t set. This is a strong outside zone runner that will stretch his runs, before sticking his foot in the dirt and cutting back against the grain for hidden yardage.
ATH: Jalen Carter Jalen Carter 6'1" | 165 lbs | ATH Aurora Christian | 2026 State IL , 6’1″ 165, Aurora Christian
A rangy cornerback prospect on defense with good speed, solid route awareness, and will take quality angles to the football. Carter can generate major YAC on offense when touching the football in space and shows terrific stop & start. This young man catches everything thrown his way and looks to get vertical immediately following a reception.
