Our January rankings update pinpointed 508 worthy players across four classes. For a variety of evidence, our team decided that each of those 500-plus were worthy of a coveted spot in our rankings.
But we’d be naive to think we’ve evaluated everyone or didn’t miss a few along the way.
PRZ South Carolina is constantly looking at as many of the 10,000 prep football players in the SCHSL and SCISA ranks as possible. Now, a little over a year from its inception, the Community Film Room is back.
Each week, we’ll break down five currently unranked players from across the state to let you see what we’re seeing. The series will lead right into the next rankings update in May and beyond.
In Episode 25, we’ve got two linemen who have already proved they could lead the way, an electric receiver who doubles as a safety, a linebacker with a prototypical college frame and a tight end ready to make sure the entire state knows his name
Kyan Kennedy TE, Chester
Let us introduce you to Kyan Kennedy (pictured). He’s 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds. He blocks with authority and is just as likely to leave a linebacker wondering where he went. Kennedy put up 34 solo tackles and another 34 assisted stops last year and also finished with 14 tackles for loss. But what he does on offense is nothing short of special. Kennedy is in many ways the hidden gem of an offense that put up 4,400 yards in 2022. His role in it went well beyond his 23 receptions, 320 yards and six scores. Kennedy is going places. After he helps Chester do its thing for one more season first.
Brandon Pontoon Brandon Pontoon 6'2" | 295 lbs | DL Wagener-Salley | 2024 State SC DL/OL, Wagener-Salley
Pontoon was a Class 1A All-State honoree last fall on the offensive line. And we’re not so sure he couldn’t have doubled up on the other side of the ball, too. While playing primarily on the interior on both sides, Pontoon’s footwork allows him to pull with as much ease as he cuts around offensive counterparts when he’s on defense. He’s No. 1 in his class with a GPA just below the 5.0 mark and – not surprisingly – the combination of his class and athletic work is starting to get the attention of some of the smaller schools across the state.
Max Moorman LB, Oceanside Collegiate
With two years of high school eligibility left, we’re exciting to see where Moorman goes. The combo linebacker has no problem playing inside or outside of the defensive ends and tracks plays the same way from either spot. He accounted for 60 total tackles and 5.5 tackles for loss as a sophomore in 2022. Considering he’s now standing 6-foot-3 (barefoot) and 202 pounds, the Oceanside product is in the type of spot to take advantage of a large number of high-profile games on the Landsharks’ docket next fall.
Quay’sheed Scott ATH, Marion
Recent offers from Old Dominion and Charleston Southern came for Scott for one primary reason: He is effective in so many ways that getting him on the field isn’t so much a priority is it is a necessity. As a strong safety, Scott can lay back in coverage and confuse receivers or blitz off the edge and put a huge smack on ball carriers. When he’s lined up at receiver, the 6-foot, 185-pounder has the makings of a blazer who jogged the final few yards of plenty of his touchdowns because no defender was close enough to threaten his path. Scott very likely flirts with a 1,000-yard receiving season as senior.
Watson Young Watson Young 6'2" | 260 lbs | OL Daniel | 2024 State SC OL, Daniel
Daniel has gotten used to having all-state linemen walking the halls, and Young is the next bruiser doing his thing for the Lions. The 6-foot-3, 280-pound tackle ended up being a crucial piece of a squad that lost its two-time state champion quarterback yet still ended up averaging 49.8 points per game and getting to the 12-win mark. Daniel will again have to replace some big names this fall, but Young won’t be one of them. He’s got all the makings of a spread tackle ready to perform at the next level, too.
