In addition to our 365-day-a-year football approach, Prep Red Zone South Carolina is the official media partner of the 2023 Palmetto Combine Series, meaning subscribers will get first-hand information on many of the 1,200 athletes in attendance at all four sites.
Each of the Palmetto Combine Series’ four venues are going to be chock full of talent across the board.
At West Florence on April 16, a number of defensive backs will be trying to steal the show.
The following seven backstops have already made a career out of being the final line of defense. Now, they’ll be measuring their skill set against plenty others who are also pretty good at their jobs.
Dirrick Goodman Dirrick Goodman 6'2" | 200 lbs | LB South Florence | 2024 State SC South Florence
Goodman is a spark plug who creates turnovers; he had a team-high six picks and forced a fumble last fall during South’s championship season. His vision and anticipation are what make him such a good football player. Oh, and he’s 6-foot-2 and 200 pounds? Goodman has what it takes to put up a solid combine.
Jamauri Davis Carolina Forest
Davis is a legit 6-foot-2 corner with excellent coverage skills. He sticks close when necessary and closes in a hurry – thanks in part to a great stride. By the time the season at a midway point last year, teams quit trying to throw his direction. No one will be able to avoid him in Summerville, though.
Khalil Moody Crestwood
Moody is quickly establishing himself as one of the best route runners in the entire class of 2024. He’s ultra-attentive of the details that allow him to get open, and he’s going to put up a ton of yards. We think that’s exactly why he’s also such a good safety. Moody is way ahead of the game in anticipating plays and following directions in the combine will be nothing to him.
Kelvin Hunter Kelvin Hunter 6'1" | 185 lbs | DB West Florence | 2024 State SC West Florence
Hunter (pictured) is a ridiculous talent who recently announced a recruiting top five that was four-deep on Power 5s. Frankly, he’s going to be one of the biggest story lines in the Pee Dee during the 2023 season. But first, he’s going to be drawing a lot of eyes on his home field during the Palmetto Combine Series event.
La’Ontray Knox Loris
A running back who might just break the 1,000-yard mark next fall, Knox is also an all-region basketball selection for a pretty good Class 3A hoops squad. But where Knox might just make his way into the college ranks is as a flexible corner who could slide into a safety spot. He’s 5-foot-10 and a solid 195 pounds. He’s not getting beat off the edge often.
Quay’Sheed Scott Marion
Not too long ago, we profiled what we’ve started to expect from Scott, the two-way Swamp Foxes’ standout who has become a favorite target of Marion quarterback Gabe Cusack Gabe Cusack 6'1" | 190 lbs | QB Marion | 2024 State SC . Scott (6-foot-1, 185 pounds) can cover a lot of ground in a short amount of time and while we don’t think his true speed is measurable only in MPH, he can get where he needs to be in a hurry.
Mycah Cummings, Ridge View
Cummings will be joining a loaded defensive backfield crop of players from the Pee Dee, but he fits right in with this group. The Ridge View safety is a compact 6-foot and 170 pounds and has a nose for the football or ball carrier. He’s also a burner in the field and might just end up doing some damage on a track at the state level before his time at Ridge View is done.
EDITOR’S NOTE: Members of the Prep Red Zone team will be on site for each of the four Palmetto Combine Series events in April, covering all the players and storylines. This year’s series will be held April 1 at Summerville, April 2 at York, April 15 at Westside and April 16 at West Florence.
