One of the top defensive line prospects in the state of New Mexico has made his college decision.

6-foot-7, 255-pound DL/LB [player_tooltip player_id='138085' first='Dalton' last='Trapp'], who played a key role on Class 3A champion Ruidoso's suffocating defense, announced on social media late Friday that he has committed to Eastern New Mexico..

National Signing Day for D-II schools is Feb. 1.

Trapp committed to ENMU shortly after taking an official visit to the school's campus in Portales. He picked the Greyhounds over offers from Western New Mexico, New Mexico Highlands, West Texas A&M, Colorado State-Pueblo and NMMI.

“I visited a few other colleges but ENMU made me feel like I was at home,” Trapp told Prep Redzone New Mexico. “The coaching staff was very welcoming and personable and made me feel like I was already a part of their family.”

Trapp said he was recruited to play defensive line in ENMU's new 3-4 defense under returning head coach Kelley Lee. The good news is the scheme is similar to the one Ruidoso ran in 2022 when they won the Class 3A championship behind a stellar defense led by [player_tooltip player_id='269581' first='Gavon' last='Hall'], [player_tooltip player_id='274789' first='Connor' last='Holland'] and Trapp.

ENMU defensive coordinator Oliver Soukup (reunites with Lee after 1 season as Carlsbad head coach and several seasons at New Mexico State) did an excellent job explaining the 3-4 system and how Trapp fit the scheme.

Trapp also liked Lee's low-key approach.

“Coach Kelley Lee was very respectful. He never said anything to me trying to get me to commit or trying to get me to stay away from any other college,” Trapp said. “He was just telling how ENMU is for players who will put in hard grit and true work. All the coaches kept in touch and made this decision easier to make.”
