Continue ReadingIt was easy to see that 8th grader, Javen Donald Javen Donald 6’5″ | 325 lbs | OL IA , stood out among his peers at this past week’s PRZ Midwest Showcase, and I was immediately excited to see this young athlete perform. This young man already has a stout figure at 6’5″ and 310 LBS that could see him excel at the college ranks, but how did he perform, you might ask? Well, Javen wasn’t without mishaps, but he certainly put on a show which saw him lock up plenty of defensive linemen during one-on-one matchups. Javen has immense strength for his age, and his footwork caught my eye for such a young fella. Look for Javen to be a stout tackle as he continues to develop throughout the years.
A solid first step is a simple yet fundamental piece to a lineman’s success, and Connor showed that he had a significant first step. The lone Ohio representative on the First Team was quick and low out of his stance and planted that first step into the ground as if it were a tree stump. Connor showed that he really worked on his footwork and took it seriously by displaying these fundamentals in indy drills and his one-on-one matchups. Connor also showed great effort in running through cones and never letting up anywhere on the field.
Will asserted himself as the most physical offensive lineman at camp from the very first matchup against a defensive lineman, and it made quite an impression on me. Will showed that he has that offensive lineman mindset that most coaches look for in their o-Linemen, the mentality that no one will get the best of them and they will protect their QB at all costs. Needless to say, I loved seeing this in Will so early on in his football development. Although, as there is a caveat with everything, there is one with Will and his aggressiveness, as it sometimes got the best of him when he let his physicality get him off balance. Nevertheless, Will is someone you want on your side of the ball. With his 6’4″ frame, he has the versatility to play tackle or tight end in the future.
Highlights
Gunnar Lee
Gunnar Lee
Gunnar stunned me with his staunch ability to keep his base under him and his legs moving when engaged with a defensive lineman. This ability escapes many much older athletes than Gunnar and is frequently a career-defining attribute that Gunnar shows he has at such a young age. Defensive linemen were not successful in pulling moves on Gunnar because he always had his feet beneath him and his weight centered, which allowed him to react without getting unbalanced. In addition to his strong base, Gunnar had a solid first punch out of his stance into his opponent’s chest, catching them off guard more often than not. While he’s not the 6-foot-2 and taller that the other First Team’ers are right now, this young man is sure to have a solid career ahead of him.
