Tight Ends can be a wildcard in most games. The versatility in an athlete to be a good TE separates them from the rest. Usually a good post in basketball translates well to being a good TE. One trait for a noticeable TE is blocking ability, while being a reliable target. There are four Tight Ends in the Dakotas that need some serious looks at the next level.
Jackson Hoffmann Jackson Hoffmann 6'3" | 200 lbs | TE Brookings | 2023 State – Brookings, Highlights
Hoffmann may seem undersized for a TE, but his play in the trenches more than make up for that. He has a very quick step off the snap and keeps his pad level low. The leverage with his technique leads to his strength to make the blocks in the run game. I like how he climbs to the second level on down blocks, and has the awareness to take the most dangerous defender when climbing. The quick release also helps him get into pass routes quick and get open before the defense adjusts to it. He adds another speed threat running up the seam or on flag routes, making him very dangerous on big play downs.
Jaden Rustad Jaden Rustad 5'11" | 190 lbs | TE GF Red River | 2023 State – Grand Forks Red River, Highlights
Rustad was used very interestingly in the offensive scheme. Taking handoffs, making blocks or running routes, he was making a play for the offense every play. He has a very consistent motor on each play, making him difficult to key on whether it was run or pass. His speed got him passed the defense quickly and he caught the passes before the defense adjusted to him. While he was carrying the ball, he was very difficult to bring down, needing a gang tackle to bring him down. When he was lead blocking, there was going to be a big gap left behind him for the ballcarrier.
Cole Jahner Cole Jahner TE Bismarck | 2023 State – Bismarck, Highlights
Jahner is built like a WR, plays like a TE. If there was one kid on Bismarck’s offense you need to know where he is at all times, Jahner is it. His height and speed made him a big threat for a big play on any down. He is a very good route runner, to get him space when he splits out wide. The motor he shows on each play is incredible. He’ll keep the wheels turning while he’s wrapped up, but still slip out of the tackle and turn it into a big play. Lastly, his hands and good vertical made him the best red zone threat for the offense.
Josh Mussi Josh Mussi 6'4" | K Deuel | 2023 State – Deuel, Highlights
I’ve been working with Mussi for the last couple months. He is a good Kicker, but he has the frame and technique to play at TE. I liked his footwork out of the three-point stance to open the perimeter for is backs. His hand placement is perfect when making a block and moves his feet quick to stay in position. I also like his quick release off the snap into his routes, and finding the soft spot in the defense to be a good target on key downs. His sneaky speed can have him burning you before you notice, and when you do, it’s too late.
