Making headway after appearing in our rankings early in a career isn't easy.

The sample sizes are smaller, and - in this case - the chances for a sophomore to both do enough to warrant placement and then advancing at this stage after a cycle or two is even smaller.

Yet, two players (Byrnes athletes [player_tooltip player_id='272705' first='Armoni' last='Weaver'] and [player_tooltip player_id='272708' first='Chamarryus' last='Bomar']) each moved up a spot and Hannah-Pamplico tailback [player_tooltip player_id='464882' first='Jamarcus' last='Williams'], Dillon lineman [player_tooltip player_id='272711' first='Carlos' last='Miller'], Socastee receiver [player_tooltip player_id='413888' first='Josh' last='Brown'] and new Summerville quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='367350' first='Jaden' last='Cummings'] each bumped up two.

After that, we had four players more who climbed at a slightly higher pace.

[player_tooltip player_id='346198' first='Bryce' last='Rainwater'] OL, Hillcrest (Up 3 spots)

We're always impressed by players who perform against top-level competition. And when you factor in that Hillcrest averaged 41 points per game against the schedule faced (seven Class 5A and a Class 3A state runner up), Rainwater's play was even more noteworthy. He stood up powerful linemen and knocked speedy edge rushers off target for the majority of the season. He never looked like a sophomore throughout.

[player_tooltip player_id='464881' first='Jayden' last='Sellers'] WR, South Florence (Up 3 spots)

By the end of the season, when Sellers' older brother (you might have heard of him) was putting on a clinic, Jayden was proving how valuable he was, too. The receiving portion of the tandem picked up a bunch of slack from an injured teammate and finished the year with 827 yards, 12 touchdowns and some tangible attention from some Power 5 programs.

[player_tooltip player_id='346189' first='Cutter' last='Woods'] QB, Westside (Up 10 spots)

Time will tell what a coaching change at Westside will mean for a player who has had two standout seasons at a pair of different schools. After starting at Eastside in Greenville as a freshman, Woods made the quick jaunt over to Anderson prior to his sophomore season. What happened there was among the best seasons for any sophomore signal caller in the state: 3,014 yards, 28 touchdowns, completed 68 percent of his passes and threw just five picks.

[player_tooltip player_id='272722' first='Zion' last='Gilbert'] RB, Carolina Forest (Up 13 spots)

Although the Panthers' tailback (pictured) reached the end zone in his first varsity game, we didn't see the potential start to come into focus until it counted. In region play (four games) and the first two rounds of the playoffs, Gilbert rushed for 657 yards and 11 touchdowns. He was by far the most productive of a stable of Carolina Forest running backs during the biggest part of the year.
