#1 Stillwater completed a perfect 13-0 season with a 26-21 victory over #2 Choctaw in the 6A-2 state championship on Friday afternoon. And they did it behind a defense that has dominated all season. Coming into Friday’s game, The Stillwater defense forced 39 turnovers on the season. They got three more turnovers on three interceptions that held the Yellowjacket offense off the scoreboard for an extended period. Choctaw star quarterback Steele Wasel Steele Wasel 6'4" | 210 lbs | QB Choctaw | 2023 State OK had just four interceptions on the season and Stillwater’s defense came down with three interceptions on Friday.
Choctaw would actually take the lead after a scoreless first quarter. They would go up 7-0 early in the second period. The Pioneers would score on a trick play right before halftime on a Talon Kendrick touchdown pass to Julius Talley to tie the game at 7. The Pioneers would keep the scoring going in the third quarter. Heston Thompson Heston Thompson 5'11" | 175 lbs | WR Stillwater | 2024 State OK would catch a touchdown from Gage Gundy Gage Gundy 6'3" | 200 lbs | QB Stillwater | 2023 State OK and then Gundy would go 54 yards right up the middle to go up 20-7. The fourth quarter clock and turnovers would put the Yellowjackets in a hole in the fourth quarter.
They would score with a little over four minutes to play to make it 20-14 in favor of the Pioneers. But on the next possession, Stillwater running back Noah Roberts Noah Roberts 5'7" | 155 lbs | RB Stillwater | 2023 State OK got loose on a 40+ yard run and then Zac Tyson Zac Tyson 6'2" | 200 lbs | LB Stillwater | 2023 State OK would rumble in on a 9-yard touchdown with a little over a minute to play. Roberts would finish with just under 200 yards on the afternoon while Gundy would add 102 yards on the ground, including that 54-yard touchdown run.
Turnovers and penalties hurt the Yellowjackets on Friday afternoon as both teams were searching for their first state championship since the 60’s. The Pioneers finished off the perfect season and finally got the gold ball after knocking on the door for the last four seasons.
