Continue ReadingWe’re keeping things moving with the 7A IHSA State Championship game with Mount Carmel and Batavia in this action that has D1 prospects on both sides of the ball along with talents for the D2, NAIA, and D3 levels. Mount Carmel got off to a hot start going up 28-0 going into the 2nd but Batavia was able to respond getting on the board in the 2nd. It was all Mount Carmel from here as they went on to win 44 to 20. With that being said, there are talented young men on both teams and we’re here to highlight these young men. Without further ado, let’s dive into the Mount Carmel Standouts.

Denny Furlong
Mr. Furlong finished the night with 7 receptions for 47 yards and 1 carry for 14 yards in a win against Batavia to win the 7A IHSA State Championship. This young man has foot quicks to him which are seen when he runs jet sweeps and in the return game. Here, he uses his lateral quickness to turn the corner and once he does he can weave in/out of defenders in open space to break a long run. As a return man, he flashes his elusiveness making the first defender miss in open space before getting vertical and almost breaking a long return before being pushed out of bound. A solid receiver/return man for the next level – currently holds an offer from Lindenwood University.
Mr. Dowling had himself one heck of a season being at the helm of this offensive attack and finished the night 25/40 for 262 yards and 4 TDs. He did so by using his quick release to get the ball out quickly on screens and keeping his eyes downfield when working on the move to keep the chains moving. This young man can make all level throws (level 1, level 2, and level 3) where he can also add a touch on the ball putting it right where his receiver can get it. He also flashes his arm strength to make throws outside the numbers and his poise in the pocket. Currently has a few offers ranging from across various levels, wherever this young man lands they’re getting a sure fire competitor and one heck of a high character young man.
Highlights
Mr. Bossie has been on my radar for a long time now and put on a performance finishing the night with 5 receptions for 62 yards for 1 TD and 3 carries for 18 yards with 1 rushing TD. This young man is a shifty elusive type of player that can make defenders miss in open space. This is exactly what he did in the redzone to secure a TD in the 2nd when he ran an out route – he made the first defender miss then waltzed his way into the endzone. In another play, he took the slot receiver screen and broke multiple tackles along the sideline as he fought for extra yards to keep the chains moving. This young man can be a valuable asset to the next level in multiple facets of the game with his 4.5 40 – also can’t forget that he’s a dominant track runner as well. Currently only holds an offer from Upper Iowa University who would get a steal of a player if he decides to commit there.
Highlights
Mr. Arrington finished the night with 3 receptions for 80 yards with 2 TDs and one of them coming off a fake punt. This young man can get vertical quickly once he secures the slot receiver screen to threaten the edge forcing the linebackers out of the box and into open space. He can also go up for 50/50 balls on deep shots downfield where he was able to adjust last second to make an impressive catch on the pylon – unfortunately he was just shy of being in the endzone for 6 as he fell out of bounds right on the pylon. An impressive catch nonetheless. This young man also plays defense where he can close quickly in the flat delivering a hit on contact forcing an incomplete pass and came on a blitz during a two point conversion blowing up the opposing QB with a heavy hit. This resulted in an errand throw and the two point conversion not being good. This overall athlete also runs track where he competes at a high level and currently holds a few offers.
Jimmy Deacy

Mr. Deacy got into the endzone early in this game with both of his receiving TDs coming in the 1st quarter. The first came off a 3 slant step and the 2nd coming on a deep shot downfield where he tracked the ball and went up for the 50/50 ball to secure the contested catch. Later in this game he went on another deep shot downfield where he adjusted last second and it just fell incomplete as he was falling to the ground. He can also secure the catch in traffic as he shifts his way into the soft spot in zone coverage. That’s how he was able to finish the night with 7 receptions for 86 yards and his 2 TDs in the 1st.
Mr. Smith was all over the place finishing the night with 3 tackles, 1.0 TFLs, 1 INT, and 1 PBU. One play that stood out the most was when he delivered a heavy hit in the flat on the opposing QB forcing a fumble on the play. Here, he closed quickly and wasn’t afraid to lower his shoulder driving through contact to stick the ball carrier. This young man can also go up for 50/50 balls on deep shots downfield where he’s able to force pass breakups if he isn’t able to come down with the interception. The biggest trait to keep an eye on for this young man is how quickly he can close to the flat and deliver heavy hits on the ball carrier in the flat both in run support as well as in pass coverage. This young man fits the mold of defensive backs college coaches are shifting towards – long reach that can close quickly and aren’t afraid to come down in run support. Currently has no offers and would be a darn good defensive back steal if you’re a D2/NAIA coach as he has a high ceiling that has yet to be realized from the next level.
Mr. Manning has been on my radar since his Marist days when he entered the high school ranks. This young man is a shifty elusive back that has a low center of gravity to him. He uses this to his advantage to make defenders miss in open space and can weave in/out of defenders here as well to break a long run along the sideline. His burst through the hole is what helps him gain a step on 2nd level defenders beating them to the perimeter which is how he was able to rack up 101 rushing yards on the night off 10 carries. With having another year left under his belt, be sure to keep an eye on this speedster as he’ll be working with standout Darrion Dupree in the backfield.
Highlights
Mr. Novickas finished the night with 7 tackles and 1.0 TFL being a force in run support. This was all done by him plugging the C and B gap by being quick out of his stance. At times, he was able to slip the blocks to disrupt the plays in the backfield which is how he was able to come away with his TFLs on the night. One other area to keep an eye on is his speed rush off the edge where he generates pressure on the QB after beating the OT to the turn point. As he takes his talents to the MAC next fall, you’ll be hearing this young man’s name sooner rather than later at the next level.
Highlights
Mr. Tomaszewski is another standout that’s taking his talents to play P5 football at Kansas State University next fall. This comes as no surprise as he had high potential coming into this season on both sides of the ball. On offense, he’s an aggressive run blocker that has a strong punch at the point of attack to maul defenders over. On defense, he’s a darn good 2 gap defender that can plug gaps to keep his linebackers free to make a play on the ball.
Mr. Startz finished the night with 11 tackles as he was working gap to gap and triggering downhill quickly between the tackles to meet the ball carries in the hole for little to no gain on the play. It doesn’t show on the stat line but throughout the night he was taking run blocks head on to jolt the run blocker upright and forcing the ball carrier to bounce outside. The result of this was his fellow teammates rallying quickly to the ball to secure the tackle to keep the opposing team behind the sticks working on 3rd and long consistently throughout the night. This young man has another year left of HS ball left and already has offers across the MAC and P5 interest. Be sure to keep a close eye on this young man as his stock is still rising.
