A common occurrence at these Showcases is that the DBs are usually a small group. A lot of times you will see WRs play both sides, which is great for those athletes because the more you can do the more valuable you are to coaches. The true DBs that came out to the Showcase were a talented bunch. There were a few athletes that particularly stood out, and I want to talk about those athletes today.
The underclassman out of Regis HS is an athlete. Plain and simple. We had him ranked as an RB coming into the fall. He registered as a WR for the Showcase. The sophomore left the day with a rep in the Best vs Best battles as a DB. Just get the 6′ 175 lbs underclassman on the field and let him stand out. Tait had an elite 4.25 in the 5-10-5 Drill, and broad jumped 9’10”. At DB, Evrett leaned on his athleticism. He has experience at safety, but not much playing man coverage. Tait did a solid job of flipping his hips and running with receivers. He was aggressive at the catch point to break up passes. Last, it is well worth noting that the young man came out and competed. He didn’t shy away from any reps, and went all out every snap. An ATH/DB to follow.

Joshua has been a consistent name over the past few weeks on Prep Redzone WI. Hard to ignore him as he had been producing on the field during Catholic Memorial’s run to the State Finals. Then he came out to the PRZ WI Showcase, and he verified what the tape was showing. That was an athlete who is 6′ 176 lbs, has good range thanks to running 4.75, and broad jumps 9′. What we didn’t see on tape was Josh playing man to man coverage. Joshua plays safety for CM, so it was good to see him in a new situation. It was good to see him willing and ready to compete and make receivers earn it. Joshua has a lot of momentum entering the offseason. If he hasn’t made his way onto your radar it is time to change that.
One of the best physiques was on the Wisconsin Rapids junior Ashton Fischer Ashton Fischer 6’1″ | 215 lbs | DB Wisconsin Rapids | 2024 State WI . He checked in at a muscle bound 5’11” 203 lbs. If you follow offseason gym work closely you won’t be surprised by that. Wisconsin Rapids has had some impressive weight lifters on their team this past fall. Fischer being one of them. That strength wasn’t wasted either. Fischer left as my top testing performance of the position. Check out his full numbers below.
Being a safety, Ashton came in and had to face a lot of new experiences. From drill work where they focused on footwork for man coverage to actually playing man coverage in the one on one battles. In the drills I got my first look at the junior. It was good to see him start to pick it up quickly and show that he has quick feet. During the live battles, Ashton played to his physical side and would redirect receivers to throw off timing. He also was able to rely on his stand out athleticism to run downfield with receivers. Fischer will be switched to DB in the rankings going forward. Make sure you have him on your radars. Big year incoming in 2024.

The Rufus King junior earned a spot in one of the four Best vs Best reps to end Session II of the PRZ WI Showcase. That was on the back of a strong day in the previous one on one battles. The 5’10” 183 lbs athlete is a well built athlete that was able to play strong on the receivers. He was able to play tight thanks to solid short area agility, and he could throw off receivers in their routes with his strength. Malik also showed off natural ball skills. He grabbed an INT in that Best vs Best rep to end his Showcase. The kid made plays all afternoon. I’m excited to take a look at his junior film, and get him into the Class of 2024 Rankings.

The top performer, and MVP, of the defensive backs was the senior CB out of Illinois. Michael made the quick trip up north, and proved to be a senior that deserves a look. Dive into his performance more HERE in my MVP article. Then go check out the senior’s film.
