Clarkson engineered the Bosco offense to an excellent game against Mater Dei.
He exited the game in the second quarter with a knee injury, but led Bosco to a 17-point second half.
His throws were on target and had just the right amount of velocity on them. He scrambled when needed and kept his eyes on the secondary while under pressure.
Multiple Bosco receivers looked good, but McClain stood out with his ability to find spaces in zone coverage and make low-percentage catches.
He had the first touchdown of the game for Bosco on a deep drag route that forced Mater Dei’s secondary to make mistakes. McClain had 95 yards on four receptions including a big diving catch to set up a touchdown in the third quarter.
He found spaces against zone and beat guys when man-to-man. That’s all you can ask of a top receiver.
Haney did a nice job protecting the middle of the pocket and giving Clarkson time to throw the ball.
He is a very effective communicator and did a nice job calling out inside blitzes and he was ready for any stunt Mater Dei threw at the Bosco offensive line.
His hips are square in pass protection and he has a nice, wide base. Haney’s run blocking could improve but he was facing big 1-technique players for Mater Dei.
Coach Jason Negro raved about Haney to media during the week and it’s easy to see why.
Talanoa did a very nice job at right tackle, particularly in pass protection.
He has a good first step and uses his inside hand well. His footwork is solid and he leverages his bodyweight well.
Mater Dei loves to pressure the quarterback from the outside and Talanoa did as good a job as anyone could have expected keeping the right side of the pocket clean.
Bosco likes to unlock Uiagalelei at tight end in big games and they did just that against Mater Dei in the championship game.
He had a beautiful touchdown catch and even when he wasn’t making big catches, he was drawing pass interference penalties because he is a such a physical mismatch.
MATER DEI
Harris is the best sophomore receiver in the class in my opinion and he came to play against an elite St. John Bosco secondary.
He scored the first touchdown of the game by beating an elite Power 5 prospect cornerback in man coverage. After beating him in man coverage, he made a nice contested catch in the endzone.
His speed is well above average and his body control is excellent.
Tohi was the best freshman offensive lineman I saw last season and he stepped up bigtime this season at guard for the Monarchs.
He was the most consistent of the Mater Dei offensive linemen in the championship game.
Tohi got some push on his double teams with center BJ Tolo BJ Tolo 6’1″ | 310 lbs | OL Mater Dei | 2023 State CA . The pressure in the passing game rarely came from the interior left where Tohi was playing.
Four of the five Mater Dei offensive linemen are returning next season and Tohi has a very promising future.
