Our two defensive players of the year made it to the state titles. Only one could be victorious after the game, but we have them both listed to represent the state in a great way. Let’s check out these guys.
4A North Defensive Player of the Year
Gabriel Moore Gabriel Moore 6'4" | 245 lbs | DL Louisville | 2023 State MS is our player of the year for the North. He displayed dominance all season long even against players that were on higher levels than him. He finished the season with over 120 tackles, 38TFL and 15 sacks with 5 FF. It’s hard to give this award to any other player in the North. He showed out all season and was a major part of the Wildcats being so successful this season. He is a big guy that isn’t very easy to block. He is a raw talent that will only get better on the college level. He uses his natural talent to beat his opponents. He has those long arms and that twitch that helps him get around well in the trenches. He is going to be a beast on the college level.
4A South Defensive Player of the Year
Tyree Bridges also known as Sarge is our defensive player of the year for the South. This guy is a mean man on the football field. He packs a mean punch when he comes down to hit. He had over 100 tackles this season. Sarge isn’t just a guy who plays aggressive every play. Sarge has a very high football IQ and understands how to play his linebacker position. Sarge knows how to play sideline to sideline and does not make many mistakes. He is a the type of guy that a lot of coaches would love to have on their team. He helped lead his team to the state title this season with great leadership. Bridges is an absolute dude.
Honorable Mentions
Laterrius Haynes is a guy that put up seven interceptions this season. He also returned three of those for a touchdown. Haynes is one of the most underrated guys in the state. There is no reason why he shouldn’t be mentioned amongst multiple platforms. The plays that he makes are always right on time. He knows how to step up in clutch moments. Haynes should definitely consider the JUCO route. He is a guy that can compete with anybody, and he deserves the chance to show that. He will be a guy that plays nickel/safety on the next level. Coaches will be happy to have him.
Bryson Walters Bryson Walters 6'2" | 220 lbs | LB Itawamba Agricultural | 2025 State MS is another guy that played very good this season. Bryson is a 6-foot-2 225-pound, linebacker who is only a sophomore. He has recorded over 220 tackles in his first two seasons starting. He started last season as a freshman, and had a phenomenal year as a sophomore. The way he reads is amazing. He is a film room junky that loves to know his assignment. He is going to continue to be a big time name in 4A. He has two more seasons and a lot of time to ne our defensive player of the year. I think he is a power five guy who will only continue to develop into a better player. He is a true stud.
