We now enter a phase where we start to see junior colleges, Division 2, and Division 3 programs get into the act and hand out offers to athletes around the state. In this article, we begin to take a hard look at some promising prospects who either don’t have any offers yet, or will be waiting until the traditional signing day of February 3rd to put pen to paper.
We start on the offensive side of the football with a short, but shifty, slot receiver from 4A powerhouse Columbus who racked up over 1,200 yards receiving as a senior.
WR Jordan Woods – 5’8″ 170 – Columbus HS / @Jordan6Woods
Senior Stats: 63 receptions, 1223 yards, and 13 touchdowns
Blink and you’ll miss him. He’s that much of an elusive playmaker. Woods capped off a stellar career for the Cardinals in 2022 with over 1,200 yards receiving and an average of 20 yards per catch. He’s dangerous in the screen game, but one look at the fourth play on his highlight tape shows you how great of a route runner he is as well. He does have incredible leaping ability, which makes him a reliable option in traffic and on fade routes. At the next level, Woods will need to prove that he can defeat press coverage against bigger corners, but, the tape doesn’t lie. He’s dangerous with the ball in his hands out on the perimeter. If you’re a smaller program looking for a game-changer, you’ve found him.
He’s got the stuff to develop into a go-to slot for a Division 2 or Division 3 program. Currently has no offers.
OL Joshua Cobb – 6’1” 250 – Midland Christian School / @JoshCobb65
Cobb is a flat out workhorse. Lines up at tackle for the Mustangs, but will need to move inside when he gets to college. He’s graceful when pulling and working his way to the second level, and he plays with a mean streak. His kick slide is clean in pass protection, and the initial punch packs some power in the run game. A smaller program is going to get a true gem.
Currently has a Division 3 offer from Southwestern.
OT Matthew Schell – 6’5″ 290 – Wylie HS / @MatthewSchell75
Schell is a developmental tackle prosect with a ton of upside. The athleticism is there along with some physical traits that you like to see, and he moves very well for a hog molly, but he has a tendency to stand straight up in pass protection and can get off balance. Where he excels is in the run game, as he fires off the line with tenacity and does a great job of clearing the way for his backs. Will be a great pickup for a Division 2 program looking to add some grittiness to their offensive line room.
Currently has a Division 2 offer from East Central.
